Together RPG - 9/16 -> 11/16 - Jagged Alliance

Post by Jmustang1968 »

Sorry for the delay, but our next group RPG venture will be with Jagged Alliance and represents the strategy/tactical RPG genre. Jagged Alliance is a western developed game and those who enjoyed XCOM may also like JA.

From wikipedia:
Jagged Alliance is a series of turn-based tactics video games. From the first Jagged Alliance installment on, the series received critical acclaim and gained a significant cult following, although this never translated to major commercial success. The first games in the series were for DOS, but work well under all flavours of Microsoft Windows and in emulators like DOSBox. From Jagged Alliance 2 on, the games were developed using DirectX for native Windows operation. Jagged Alliance 2 was also released for Linux and is currently available on Steam and on GOG.com for Windows.

Jagged Alliance is on PC (DOS) and had a DS remake.

Chime in on if you plan to play along and your thoughts on the game.

I have never heard of this game, but sounds like I may like it?

Looks neat. Don't think I've ever played a Western strategy RPG outside of The Temple of Elemental Evil. I may join in if I can find an inexpensive DS copy of the game.

I think you will. It will have the overhead iso tactical gunplay similar to XCOM

And Bone, I think the DS version can be had for cheap. You could also Dosbox the original. Or grab the sequel on Steam or Gog.

**Edit** The original is on gog as well. You can get it, the expansion, and the sequel for 9.99.

Oh man. I am so not taking part in this. Not because the game is bad, heavens no... the game is spectacular and I strongly suggest people take part as it is a really really good.

I just suck at it. Can't play it. Fail every time.

I'm in, gonna grab the GOG release. I'm surprised I didn't have it already actually.

I played Jagged Alliance 2 last year and it kicked my ass sideways. I think it's probably a really great game if you know what you're doing though. My dudes couldn't hit anything more than 5 feet away with a bullet. Invest in sniper mercs as much as possible I guess. Also a reallllyyyy slow game, you will need a lot of free time to make your way thought it. Probably worth the effort if it got its hooks in you.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Your mercs improve the aim if you keep at it (although when your mercs "level up", A.I.M. raises their salary as well), and also at the start you typically are using crappy pistols. The enemies are also crap shooters in the start.

In addition to Ivan (which starts out already awesome and cheap, but only speaks Russian in JA1), there is a good marksman cheap that you can start with: Leech I think it was. But Leech starts off with good aim but not very fit physically.

There is another good merc relatively cheap but I don't remember the name, it was a guy that said "Yo" a lot. EDIT: the name of the dude is "Ice", although maybe it was Vinny that said Yo a lot? It has been several years since I played this.

Sneak around and try to make it so you have 2 or 3 guys shooting at a single guy whenever possible, and you will usually down the enemy before they hit you, even if you spend several bullets.
