Sega Dreamcast 3D Fighter Library Article?

Post by Blu »

Hey Everyone,

We have a 2D Fighter Library article for Sega Dreamcast, yet we don't have a 3D counterpart. The 2D Article mentions that it'd be an eventual installment. Should we get one going?

Off the top of my head, I can recall the following US releases.

Dead or Alive 2
Soul Calibur
Virtua Fighter 3TB
Virtua-On: Oratorio Tangram
Project Justice
Tech Romancer
Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein

Some maybes that we could come to a consensus on. Do we consider these games as honorable mentions or the in-betweens?

Power Stone - Is this a true 3D fighter? Yes it's still a fighting game but I think it's blending a lot of elements of Arena fighters with the item mechanics. I think it's on the definitive list.

Power Stone 2 - Same as its predecessor.

Heavy Metal: Geomatrix - Plays like a Spawn: In the Demon's Hand, but with more emphasis on ranged attacks. It's certainly not the best game out of Capcom's lineup for the Dreamcast, but it has a unique soundtrack and is based off of the Heavy Metal universe.

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand - Great fun both competitive and cooperative. I think it's a fighting game in some regards, but feels more like a dynamite cop in terms of how it handles its combat rather than a traditional 3D fighter.

Psychic Force 2012 - Still on X & Y planes, but lots of more freedom of movement compared to traditional 2D fighters.

Mortal Kombat Gold - 3D models and changes of camera angles during matches, but you're still on a 2D plane for matches. Perhaps I'm mistaken and some clarification would be helpful.

Ultimate Fighting Championship - Has the traditional health/stamina bars. I don't have much experience with the game as compared to a few others.

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing & Ready to Rumble Boxing: Round 2 I think are worth mentioning too. Solid offerings from Midway in both games, with a lot of varied modes of play.

I'm completely uncertain of the Japan and Europe exclusives, but if I had to hazard a guess I could only come up with:
Fighting Vipers 2

I think we could scrounge up an article though if we had enough interest with the games.

If there's a standout game(s) that you'd like to contribute a blurb about, shoot me a PM and we can start working on a tentative Google Doc that we can all edit and contribute to.

Mortal Kombat Gold is another. But I think that's about it.

Here are a few, debate whether they are true 3D fighters are not, but Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and Ultimate Fighting Championship.

That came out in Europe too.

Psychic Force shouldn't be an in-between. It isn't fully traditional in that it has some interesting and varied mechanics, but it belongs on the proper list at least as much as Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram.

Also, a bunch of random wrestling games.

Thanks Reprise! Are there other EU exclusives for fighting games that the US didn't get? Like Headhunter that the US had to import.

BMF & TSTR, I'll update the OP.

Thanks Racketboy! We'll keep working on it!

I feel like UFC deserves a spot. It's a great (and technical) game, the timing and counters are very much like that of any 3d fighter. The button layout is a lot like the tekken games.

Power stone is (as you said) definitive. It just wouldn't be right to leave it out IMO. The first feels a lot more like a fighter than the 2nd, mainly due to level size and being only 2 players.

FWIW, Soul Calibur and DOA2 were my favorite "real" 3d fighters on the system.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.
