Using Sega Saturn Controllers on Xbox One?

Post by bmoc »

Has anyone had any luck using a Sega Saturn controller on Xbox One either through a Mayflash adapter or combination of Mayflash + CronusMax? This thread over at the CronusMax forums seems to indicate that it might work with some tweaking.

My neighbor has an Xbox One and we are both Killer Instinct fans. However, I'm terrible at KI using the Xbox One controller. I'd rather not drop $200 on a fightstick for a console that I don't own. At least with the Mayflash/CronusMax combo, I could use them for other things. Thoughts?

It seems to me that a MS sidewinder six button usb controller would be easier.

I don't have an xbone, but I'll try my sidewinder on my lady's 360 when I have a moment tomorrow.

I can almost guarantee you that isn't going to work. MS has proprietary drivers on their consoles for their controllers.

Although, maybe it would work if you stuck it in that CronusMax thing, which you may be referring to.

Is MS so proprietary that you can't even use MS controllers? What a shame.

Yep. Thank XInput. Hell, they even had to make new drivers for XBone controllers to work on PC, so who knows what kinda protocol those things use.

Wow, Sidewinders, blast from the past. I used to have one but with one of those pre-USB era gigantic ends. Was such a huge step up from my Gravis Gamepad.

the fact that someone would believe that a Microsoft Sidewinder USB 1.0 gamepad would work in an Xbox One is seriously grinding my brain to a halt right now.

Well I ordered the Mayflash adapter and I am almost positive that it won't work with the Xbox One natively. But I can use it on my PC and PS3 which will be handy.

I put a little more time into researching the CronusMax and it looks like in order to use to do what I want, I would need to have a PC connected to the CronusMax as it was plugged into the Xbox One.

So if I understand correctly it would look like this:
Saturn Controller --> Mayflash --> PC --> Micro USB cable --> CronusMax --> Xbox One
The full size USB port on the CronusMax would be used for authentication with a regular Xbox One controller.

Seems like a lot of hassle but it could be fun to try. Should our KI sessions become a regular thing, I will probably just get a decent PS3 fightstick to use with my PS3 and his Xbox One via the CronusMax.

As soon as I get a little more expendable cash, I'll order the CronusMax and report back with my results.

Would it not be possible to disassemble an Xbox One controller and shove the insides into a Saturn pad, similar to how people make their own arcade sticks out of old Dreamcast controllers.

Or, why not just build your own Xbox One arcade stick by taking apart a controller and soldering to arcade buttons?

I doubt the guts of an Xbox One controller would fit inside a Saturn pad. Maybe an ASCII stick or a Virtua Stick but that is way beyond my skill level and probably wouldn't save much money after getting all the tools/parts.

I'm much more inclined to to get a nice PS3 stick that I could use with my PS3/PC and my neighbor's Xbox One. The cost of a Mad Catz Arcade FightStick PRO and a CronusMax is still less than the only Xbox One fightstick and I would get to use it on multiple platforms.

And while we are on the subject, how is it possible that the Xbox One has so few options for fighting game controllers when one of its flagship exclusives is a fighting game? It baffles me...
