Game Room/ AV setup -

Post by Mattygodd »

Hi everyone, long time lurker but felt I could add something here!

I have been tweaking my set up and have opted to use an AV receiver to do my switching. I had an Onkyo 606 to start with which has a great set of analogue inputs (svideo, composite component) plus the ability to up convert to HDMI. This amp has lots of problems with the HDMI board overheating (I have had 2!) so I moved on to the Denon 1909 which works a treat but took ages to set up!

I have a PS2, Gamecube (NTSC), Saturn, C64 hooked up via s-video upconverted to HDMI
Megadrive/MegaCD, SNES, RGB scart (via hdmi converter) upscaled to HDMI
Dreamcast VGA straight to projector input with sound via amp
Xbox via component upconverted to HDMI
Xbox 360, Wii u, Xbone via HDMI

These are all output via the amps HDMi out to my projector. Ill try and add some pics later if anyone is interested.

A problem with upconverting on some of your systems is not getting the best initial output. For instance, you could get true 480p out of the PS2 and Gamecube if a direct component cable is used. Upconverting from SVideo to HDMI will not be as sharp a picture. Gamecube Component cables are very pricey, but at least try direct Component for the PS2 and hold the right combo of buttons during a particular game bootup.

I am guessing the SVideo to HDMI due to SVideo very uncommon on modern HDTVs However, why convert Component to HDMI?

Yep totally agree with my outputs not being ideal, but they could be as the amp has loads of spare component inputs, its just that I don't have the cables yet (I dont think I'll ever be able to afford the GC one as you say).

The benefit of converting component to HDMI us simply a matter of not having loads of cables trailing around the room into the back of my projector and I can switch from my amp but leave the projector input on HDMI.

I honestly have not had any artifacting etc upconverting, it looks great to me even on a projector. Input delay does not seem to be an issue either (but I am getting old)

The obvious plus of running everything through your amp is that you get great sound too.

My Xbox 360 was downstairs at the time hence the gap between the two Xboxes!

I project onto the white wall above the set up:

Cool setup. How come you have duplicates of a few consoles though? Are they different regions?

Thank you :D !

Yes and no! The GameCubes are NTSC (purple) and PAL (Black) but the two Dreamcast's are PAL for future system link possibilities!

Because I cant afford a GC component cable my PAL cube displays the better image (RGB scart) than my NTSC s-video. (I read that US Cubes cant display RGB, and PAL cubes cant display progressive scan via component)

I've just purchased a white Japanese Saturn to add to my collection. Next on my list is to get a NTSC N64 although I am concerned the games are so expensive.

Yep, Hobie-one is quite right its the later C64-C model.

I was after the traditional brown mark 1 machine that I had as a child (I think looks better now than it ever did) but they seem to have rocketed in price here in the UK.

I managed to get that one CIB for £20 off Gumtree so I was pretty pleased. Still amazed all my tapes still work today, even the dodgy copies!
