What is the 57th best game in your collection?

Post by J T »

I saw this article on RPS that claimed Outcast is the 57th best PC game of all time, and I liked the concept.

So, what is the 57th best game in your collection? Yes, there are 56 games better than it, and it has a few flaws, but it's still a respectable title, even if a little shy of true greatness. What is your 57?

If I had to guess, without actually taking the time to list out 56 above it....

I'd say a game like Cannon Spike or Samba De Amigo (57th and 58th) would fit the bill. Both are highly playable at a moments notice, easy to remember, are a ton of fun with friends and just lose their luster when being played alone or for long periods of time. That is what I imagine my 57th would be like, games like those. Games I'd always say I like, but don't love.

I'll go with Skitchin'. Not much different than Road Rash, but a pretty fun alternative.

Realms of the Haunting. It's a wonderful little game, bizarre and unique in its execution, but not something that sits on the top of the pile. It suffers from a horrendous control scheme(unless you play the EU version, which fixed a lot of the problems), and the plot can be hokey, but it's one of the most unique FPS I have ever played.

#57 goes to Sin and Punishment on the N64. Being unique and fast paced makes this one noteworthy.

#57 goes to Sonic Advance, a nice game that I really like, just can't compete with the top half of my collection ;)

I'm not even sure I could decide on a 57th best game for any particular system collection where I have that many games, let alone across my whole collection.

Well that's an interesting question. Of course, everyone's answer is going to be something they like but recognize as either flawed in some way or just not the best game ever, so I'll go with Max Payne. Love the comic book cutscenes, film noire narration, dark broody atmosphere, and "bullet time." Hate the gymnastic dream sequences and sometimes ridiculous amounts of enemies the game throws at you sometimes, along with the increasingly dated graphics.

Eh, don't think of it as something specific. Think of it as a representative example of what games you consider flawed but still enjoyable and worth playing. So what is a game you played that you liked despite its problems and don't see talked about much? Is it something on the 32x? In your longbox collection?

I am in the same boat, but for whatever reason, The Adventures of Batman and Robin (SNES) springs to mind. I am certain that I have at least 56 games that are better than it, but I am certain that thousands of others are worse.

BTW, this is an interesting topic. Whenever I read a "top 100" list, I am always mos intrigued by the games at the middle to bottom of the list. Most people agree with regard to the very best games of all time, but you get some real variety when you get above 50.
