The Nintendo DS will be a decade old this November.

Post by Opa Opa »

Wow, I feel old. The DS is going to be ten years old this November (or ten years young, if you're a glass half-full kind of person).

I still have (and use) my original DS that was bundled with the Metroid demo. I spent so much time with that demo...

So do you guys play DS games regularly or have you moved onto playing other things?

I still play DS games as there is a huge library of awesome games I have yet to beat. I still remember the christmas ten years ago when my, then-girlfriend-now-wife organized the gift of the century, yet to be topped. I had been talking the system up and how excited I was for it, yet none could be acquired for the holidays...or so I was told. She was listening the whole time and reached out to my brothers to find one on-line on Ebay. They did (with a $20 markup) and was able to grab it. My then-girlfiend-now-wife grabbed Super Mario 64 DS.

When it was time to unwrap it, they gave me the system first. I unwrapped the package, and saw the box and freaked out, opening it only to find that it was empty save for a single, Stone Temple Pilots CD.

Now, to be clear... I hate Stone Temple Pilots. Every year, for every birthday and Christmas, I receive one of the albums from my oldest brother as a joke. They tell me it was the box from someone else and I believe them and gift giving continues with me being very disappointed.

What I didn't see was the middle-brother standing behind me playing it and everyone chuckling. He tapped me on the shoulder and I noticed... best Christmas ever.

I gave up on the DS a little after the 3DS came out as I realized nothing there I would actually play anymore other than FF3 which I held onto. It was a decent handheld but I still preferred the higher quality of games the GBA seemed to have more of which I still have held onto.

And the DS makes you feel old? I was a kid when I got a test launch Deluxe System (NES) back for Christmas of 1985.

My phat DS hinge broke so that the screen was very wobbly but I hung onto it because I had a Cyclo DS. Then the hinge broke completely and the Cyclo DS just stopped working, even with the paper trick.

I bought a second hand DS Lite hoping to replace it but it turned out to have the fault where the system will shut off randomly. At that point I called it a day and sold my physical DS collection, keeping only "Learn Japanese" and the 3 Tingle games.

I've thought about trying to get a new battery for the DS Lite in the hope that this is the fault but I've read elsewhere it's a common issue with the DS Lite and can't be repaired.

Overall, the build quality of DS's was rather poor.

I still play my DSiXL fairly often. Though it is more of a portable NES and PCE than a DS. FFCC Rings of Fate and Echoes of Time are still two of my favorite games on the system. I should probably do a run through of Rings again.

Launch DS and DSiXL are in my bedside table.

Which of those Crystal Chronicles games would you recommend?

I just bought my first DS about a month ago. Have barely touched it yet, but looking forward to playing it.

I still play it from time to time. The system has a really solid library if you dig into it and there aren't to many that are extremely pricey yet.

Probably going to pick up the Mega Man Zero Collection(1-4) today they dropped it to $18 shipped a few days ago over on amazon and I never got a chance to play the GBA versions.

Echoes is all together a better game. Just do not play multiplayer online - it lags out on some boss fights

Love the DS, and not just because it shares initials with me. It has one of the best game libraries of all time. Dem RPGs.
