Sega CD model 2 (MK4102) wont spin disc.

Post by Teknoman »

I replaced the fuse in my Model 2 Sega CD, and now it turns on just fine, however discs wont spin now. The splash screen doesnt show the "No Disc" message, it just shows the checking disc message for a little, then asks to press start. After pressing start, it just sends you to the CD player screen, which after a few seconds, displays the no disc message. I've seen other videos where at least the splash screen will show "No disc" so this seems different.

Opened the system, and manually pressed the lid close switch to check any possible issues. It seems like the laser moves up and down trying to focus, but the disc never starts to spin. The laser assembly does move back into place on its own, if you force it towards the back before turning the system on, so I dont think there is anything wrong with the laser assembly motor itself? Also you can see the laser shining (red light) so I dont think its dead or anything, but honestly i'm not sure at this point.

Also the red access light constantly blinks whether or not there is a disc inside. So my question is, should the red access light always blink no matter what, even if the system spun discs properly, and even if no disc is inside? Also shouldnt the system say no disc if you close the door without anything inside at the splash screen?

I'm really at a loss and i've heard solutions from possibly having to recap the entire thing, to just replacing with a new laser.

Its Bios 2.00 if that matters.

Just trying to rule out the simplest things first... What kind of discs are you using? Are they burns? If they're burns, try using legit discs. If they're legit discs, what condition are they in? If they're scuffed and whatnot, that could cause problems if the drive is weak. I would try using a legit disc in pristine condition, and if the problem still occurs then go from there.

Legit discs in varying shape. My Sonic CD is pretty clean, Lunar has a few light scratches. I've tried music discs too that are in perfect shape, and still no luck.

Went back to make sure the 3 loom plugs were connected properly. So far it seems like my best options are to hope for the best and try to install a new laser...or search for someone who could take a look at it and fix it themselves?

Hey believe you have the same issue as me, never got around to solve it that sega cd is still laying around somewhere. I think my issue is solved with a new lens since I bought what I believe is the incorrect one, don't remember the details though.

Yeah your video is one I watched when searching all over for how to fix this. A member of the PCengineFX forum was saying that alot of the time its cheaper to just buy another one, and it seems like he was right lol

On the other hand, after all this, if it works...I should have a Sega CD that'll last awhile.

Mine does the same thing. After searching I just assumed it was the spindle motor that was shot.

Thats what the problem was. The system needed a new laser. My Silpheed gives read error at times, but I think thats because its got some scratches.

What lens are you guys ordering?

Sounds like there's a replacement that actually works. Unlike the PS1. You can buy replacement lasers for the PS1 but they're all garbage.
