Whats with the triangles on Nintendo game spines?

Post by Curlypaul »

Ok so I guess I'm the only one that doesnt know this since GC, DS and Wii games all have them, but what are they for? They seem to denote genre right?

I have no idea, all my UK GC/Wii/DS games have the green triangle. So I don't think it's anything to do with genre or ESRB/BBFC rating.

Yeah mine are mostly green although I'm sure I have one pink and a silvery grey one. Cant remember which games they are though. Is this just a UK thing then?

I have no triangles on the spines of any of my Nintendo games, so it's at least not a U.S. thing.

How curious this is making me, I thought everyone else on the planet, other than me knew what these things meant. I'll take a look at which games have what when I get back home

Is it a colored triangle with a letter or 2?

If the letters are PG, and stuff like that, PG I know is Parental guidance. I think it may be an age rating.

Heres a pic of my nintendo spines:

As you can see, most are green including Mario Kart and Resident Evil so I dont think there is any chance of it being any kind of age rating. Also Splinter Cell and Bomberman are purple so I dont think there is a genre link there either, or a First/Third party developer marker.

WTF?

Must be a European thing, GameCube games in the US have the logo at the bottom on either a black(original) or yellow(player's choice) background, and nary a triangle.

I did a search... and the only thing I read is that a guy believes it has to do with the languages for the game. Green for multiple languages, pink for english only... not sure about gray.

This isn't coming from me... just what I read elsewhere.
