Hey everyone, I was wondering what you opinion would be on buying people's fan art/mods. Do you think it's a worthwhile collector's item to have, or its it junk that is just being overpriced?
I'm talking about things like the Retron 5 or this strange N64 controller art. Would you consider them part of the canon?

Well the Retron 5 is a marketed product so it can be a collectors item if you personally deem it so. Maybe not as a piece that will go up in value but as part of your personal satisfaction that you own it, sure I'd consider it "canon".
Art is subjective so I can't comment much on it. If you like it then go for it. It would be great if you had a collection of "game art" going with displays around your home or similar area and that one piece added diversity.

I'm not the market for that stuff. I get nothing out of case mods or paint jobs. I appreciate technical mods like adding superior video/audio output, but since I'm DIY I'd just do it myself anyway.
T-shirts with clever game-related designs are cool but I'm not much into posters or models.
