I had some free time to kill and decided to try out some random SNES roms to have some games in mind when I am making future purchases. Anyway I download Power Rangers on the SNES wanting to laugh at the thing I grew up with and I ended up playing straight through the first 2 levels.
This game is much better than it had any right to be. Seriously the fighting is tight, the enemy placement is superb (always an important factor for beat em ups, and something that modern beat em up game designers have forgotten about), the platforming mechanics are fun without overstaying their welcome, and the music is just kick ass, and no I'm not talking just about the theme music.

This sounds like something out of a Capcom game (specifically Megaman but it could even fit in as a Street Fighter stage music).
And the game seems to be really cheap on ebay. Deffinetly a future buy.
Anyone else liked this game this much? Did you have it back in the day? I had the Power Rangers Movie game on the Mega Drive and I wasn't that impressed (average beat em up in the style of Final Fight, but it didn't hold any water compared to Streets of Rage)

Oh yeah. Power Rangers on SNES is awesome.
My only problem with the game, even if its hilarious, is the sprite for Zack is very racist.

I played Power Rangers "back in the day" but never owned it. A few years ago, when I went on a little SNES beat em up buying spree, I picked it up. It's definitely a solid beat em up. I'm sure a lot of people see the title and pass over it, so maybe it could be considered a hidden gem.

One thing I can't stand is the sprites of the rangers are just palette swaps with no alterations at all, even for the girls. Come on guys you made sprites for every single non-costumed character you could have made one extra girl sprite and made the tiny alterations to each of their helmets.
Other than that it's decent for what it is. It's better than the mediocre fighter the Genesis got that's for damn sure.
Speaking of fighters, Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition is one of the best fighting games on the SNES. The only thing that hurts it is lack of the original Megazord.

What makes it perplexing is the Ranger's all have unique weapons that all act differently. And, the non-suited up versions are all very different as well. So, I'm not entirely sure it was laziness. It might be a position issue, since it is a beat-em-up. The levels aren't designed just for one character, so maybe they need them to all be similar once they're in Ranger form.
I'm sure it took much less work to achieve though, regardless of why they did it.

It could have been a ROM size thing, back when the difference between 16Mbits and 24Mbits meant a lot of money over an entire production run. Power Rangers is a 16Mb ROM. By comparison, Final Fight (1) and Batman Returns are both only 8Mb. For the type of game that it is, 16Mb was probably already large enough.

The first one was good, only wish there were more fighting stages.
If you liked the first, you need to play MMPR The Movie. A lot less "cookie cutter" than the first. Plus, good music.

Wow I didn't know the one on the SNES based on the film was also good.
The Mega Drive one was so average

but at least the Mega Drive got different sprites for each character

But I like it how you start out as a human in the SNES games. Makes it more "LET'S DO THIS" when it's time to morph......sorry meant to say when it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3w7CTpNH-E
