Strange Asian PAL Sonic 3

Hey guys, was wondering if you could shed some light on this copy, I am aware of the asian version (with the MD logo in the title) but a version I have is lacking it.

Is this game quite rare or obscure? I haven't seen another Sonic 3 like it and ive looked all over the internet.

It's strange since its marketed for Asia PAL which uses the Japanese style cart, where as this has a EURO Pal cart..

I see them on eBay Australia every now and again, not rare or expensive (usually sell for less than $20.) The first image is the China / Hong Kong PAL release, I guess the second is the Australian PAL release (I imagine early as later versions mimicked the UK cover / cart art then became the Platinum Hits version, which is the most common here)
