Recommend me some good PS1 and PS2 Imports

Post by BenG76 »

I don't have any imports for either system at the moment but had my PS2 modded quite a while back in case I decided to get any. I have made a list of some of the Shmups for PS1 but I haven't for PS2. Would also be interested to hear what other good games would be out there such as platformers, puzzle type games, etc. Would of course prefer English friendly titles.

Also if this has been covered previously please point the thread out to me.

One I really really want and would consider importing a ps2 to play is Thunder Force VI, really a shame that this is the only Thunder Force game that never got a US release.

Look for Sega Ages. The Dynamite Deka (JP version of Die Hard Arcade) remake is said to be really good from that line, while I've heard bad about the Golden Axe remake, so make sure to do some research. I currently have the Space Harrier remake from that line - it's not necessarily better than the original, but it is good enough in it's own right. There's LOTS of Sega Ages games, I think somewhere in the neighborhood of 40, so there's a lot to choose from.

If you like Dynasty Warriors type game, the Sengoku Basara series is a lot of fun. Basically Samurai Warriors meets Katamari Damacy, it's a crazy hack n slash. Sengoku Basara 2 and Sengoku Basara 2 Heroes are the ones you wanna mess with.

If you want some 2D fighting games, Hokuto No Ken and Sengoku Basara X are fun but don't expect anything balanced. There's also King of Fighters 2002 Ultimate Match, which is possibly the best game in the entire KOF series - and that's coming from someone who thought the original KOF2002 was pretty meh.

I'm not too familiar with the shmup scene, but I do like Twinkle Star Sprites and Trigger Heart Excelica, both of which are imports for the system.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Don't forget that "Sega Classics Collection" released in the US is a handful of the Ages J releases, including Space Harrier.

Really? I had no idea. I figured it was just yet another Genesis ROM collection.

Too bad there's no Dynamite Deka on it, though.

That would be the "Sega Genesis Collection" for PS2. Two totally different releases.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about Gunner's Heaven.

A good streamlined fighter is Real Bout Fatal Fury Special: Dominated Mind. It was simplified a good bit compared to it's arcade counterpart, but I really enjoyed it. It was great for playing on the PSP. Another import fighter I recommend is Samurai Spirits IV Special.

Rakugaki Showtime is one of my favorites on the PSX... it's like a really weird Power Stone... I think? It's hard to define, really. But it's fun. (Except for having to unlock all the characters.)
