So what is everyone's thought on this? Almost sounds like the nintendo collector's wildest dream come true to have figures to collect again(pretty sure we've had other little toys before this), especially with how they're planning to use it...
Here's some more info thanks to spacebooger, should have put it here in the first place:

The Amiibo marks Nintendo’s entry into the “toys to life category,” as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime put it during the presentation.
Character data from the figure you’re using is downloaded to the game you’re playing, but it’s a two-way street, so data actually goes back to the figure, too, and they can change and evolve as you play.
Each figure develops its own unique abilities and skills, and works with a number of games. The Super Smash Bros. integration is just the start – Amiibo play is being prepped for many other games, too, including some already released like Mario Kart 8. More details on that update, and other games with Amiibo features are “coming soon” says Nintendo. - http://techcrunch.com/2014/06/10/ninten ... -you-play/
Here is what sets it apart the most from Skylanders and makes me interested:
"When you touch amiibo to the GamePad, the character's data is downloaded into the game you're playing, and it's also a two-way street," he said. "We can send information back to the figure. So in other words, your figure's data changes as you play, which opens the door for various new gameplay possibilities.
Think of them as more of a memory card. Smash Bros. will have a "vanilla" Mario, but if you have been using one of these figures you can take your "customized" Mario anywhere to use. More info and a video: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/0 ... rio_kart_8
Also for people on 3ds from my post later in thread:
On one hand, I generally like Nintendo characters a lot more than random monsters (Skylanders) or Disney characters. I also like how these don't seem to be made for just one game, and more like side things for multiple games. (although I'm still not sure what exactly they'll be used for in games other than Smash Bros)
On the other hand, I'm still cringing a little when I think about the price... (assuming that they will be priced similarly to Skylanders or Infinity) I know one could just only buy a few, but knowing me and how many Nintendo characters I like... It could get expensive if I were to start collecting.
So basically I'm interested (even if I were to just use them as figures ha), but I'm going to be cautious about them for now.
Ehh I'll probably end up buying one or two a month when they do finally come out and try to restrict myself. Nintendo is just fueling my money spending over the next year or two(sony's not doing much better to not make me want to spend money this year with e3)

I'm awful at restricting myself XD I'll probably end up getting some as well, but I just have to be reaaaallyy careful not to spend too much (as much as I like cute figures, I'd like to be able to buy games too haha).
I'm probably going to wait a little while after they're released either way... I'm not sure when they're coming out, but there's so many good looking games being released soonish that I probably won't have any money to spend on any Amiibos anyway
Well after I finally get my wii u I should have a lot more money to spend on games...last expensive system to buy the rest are cheap(unlike some of their games >_>)

I love the idea that every character starts the same but how you play will customize the stats and such for each figurine. The "save" feature of these figures makes them sound better than Skylanders. If I was cool (or young) enough to go to friends house to play Nintendo games these would be a must so I could play as "my" character at all times.

I have no interest in these at all. Personally I don't play with toys or action figures, I only play video games. While I do hope that this brings in some much needed revenue for Nintendo, I hope they don't become too big of deal that they become a requirement for some games to be fully enjoyed.

well if having a Link or Samus figure brings them suddenly to Mario Kart 8 or Mario Party (which were indicated as future titles to support this) , i will reallly all over it. probably collecting more than i should.
otherwise, will probably bother only if the price is around $5
