S-video out of a Genesis?

Post by Scooter »

I have a Genesis 1, is the video output already composite at the back of the Genesis or is the video (luma and chroma) combined in the cable? In other words, given the right cable, can I get S-video out of my Genesis without modifying anything in the machine?

What about Genesis 2/Nomad outputs, same question?

I think you gotta chop, yo. No easy out on this one. And only some Genesis models chop easily. The rest actually need extra chips to convert the video signal.

I won't be hacking up my virgin Genesis, I was just curious if the S-video signal was already there or not. Thanks!

No S-video out of a Genesis, according to this page on GameSX. No stereo audio either, though it at least has RGB... You can buy converters to go from RGB to component or S-video here, though it's not worth it really for $80-100.....

Cheapest option, of course, is to do an internal mod, as found here, though you did mention not wanting to do that...

No stereo? But the genesis hardware produces stereo sound, right? Also model one had a stereo headphone jack.

Genesis hardware does produce stereo sound, the Genesis model 1 just doesn't output it from the rear connector. The page I linked to on GameSX shows only mono sound from model 1, but the model 2 outputs stereo. If anything, you can always use a 1/8" to RCA connector from the headphone jack to get stereo out of it. Somewhat disappointing, I think, but at least there's a workaround...

Actually, with the Genesis 1, 32X, Sega CD 2 set up I have the final output comes out of the 32X which is the same as the Genesis 2 (including stereo audio). The Genesis 1 gets it's stereo input into the whole mess using the stereo mixing cable which runs from the front of the Genesis to the back of the Sega CD. However, if I remember correctly, I'm only taking the video out of the 32X and getting the stereo audio directly from the Sega CD to avoid routing the audio back through the Genesis and 32X. I get pretty darn good audio out of this system but the NAD amplifier it runs throught post-Sega equipment probably helps with that. But also, GIGO rules so I must be getting a good clean signal to the NAD amp in the first place.

Just wish I could also get s-video out without a lot of fuss.

and this is why I the genesis 2 get the luv over the Gen 1.

unless of cource you happen to have a SegaCD 1, then I guess you can make an exception.

but why use a gen 1 with a SegaCD 2 Scooter? you have to use the extension thing and the extra stereo from the front cable *shrug*

Actually, it seems some Genesis 3 models, with a little snipping and modding, might take the cake. Here's an s-video article from gamesx about the Gen3.

Why Gen 1/Sega CD 2? Because that's what I bought back in the day! Actually, the Genesis was a gift but I was a semi-early adoptor of that system thus the Gen 1. I was a fairly late adoptor of the Sega CD and the only units available new at the time was the SCD2. The SCD1 wasn't really on the shelves very long anyway, and was pretty expensive at the time, and as I recall it was quickly replaced with the SCD2 to coincide with the release of the Gen 2 which was issued not long after the initial launch of the Sega CD. In the SCD1 days the system really didn't have a lot of killer software so nothing compelled me to want one early on.

If I could find a complete, boxed SDC1 for a reasonable price I might buy it, but I'm not really looking because, well, I already have a Sega CD and I'm not really concerned about whether it's a 1 or 2. My Gen 1 is virgin and the one I've owned since it was new so I'm not going to hack it up. I can live without s-video, I have all these years thus far!
