The Mass Effect trilogy is pretty good, but I'm not sure why liking Witcher 2 has anything to do with it.

Because he's looking for something that offers lots of ambiguous, morality choices and consequences of those choices.

I think the Mass Effect trilogy contains the highest highs and lowest lows of the previous generation and thus warrants a go for most gamers. It's a fantastic sci fi story that started out great, but suffered the consequences of popularity which tends to favor lowest common denominator gameplay and watered down writing.
You really can't blame them though. I mean, if you're a AAA game company trying to bank on a diamond in the ruff, the best way to do so is to strip it of it's soul to please the widest audience. If mass effect were beer, we would have started out drinking guiness, but by the third round we would have switched to keystone.
ME 1 will be quite the ride, but adjust your expectations downward as you progress to the other games. The ending to ME 2 I will always remember fondly as to how cinematic and entertaining videogames can be. Then there's ME 3......whatever man.

I disagree pretty strongly that the series gets worse as it goes...each game has its pros and cons, and the full experience is one of the best of last gen. Even the ending of ME3 isn't near as bad as the whiny interwebs made it out to be.

Well, the free DLC to expand it did improve it, even if there are still valid complaints.
Either way though, the third game is largely great up until that, and the trilogy as a whole is well worth playing. Taken as a whole, it's one the defining series for the seventh gen.
Dragon Age is probably more in line with the Witcher series though.

Ah, that makes more sense.
I don't really think any of Mass Effect's choices are as big as choosing the path in Witcher 2, but they are pretty big. Fun games too, although they tend to be more shooty than a lot of RPGs, though its similar to Witcher 2 in that leveling choices affect how combat is played or gives abilities in combat.

It's very good, one of my favorite franchises from the 7th generation. Mass Effect 2 is the best in the series, in my opinion.

I kind of agree with this. The original was the best, the second was a step back in some respects, but still a quality title due to some interesting changes to the character classes and a really amazing final act. Mass Effect 3 was a mixed bag. Combat took a step backwards in some ways. You were constantly fighting the same enemies over and over again and they got really annoying with their constant spamming of grenades. The writing and story telling was some of the best in the series...until it finished with one of the worst endings in gaming history. Plus, the villains in ME 3 were pretty weak. One of them felt like a reject from a Final Fantasy game.
Honestly, I think the original Mass Effect can stand on its own. Despite being the beginning of the trilogy, it manages to tell a complete, self contained story. It had the best villains of the entire trilogy as well and the gameplay was a bit more rpg friendly, while the sequels leaned more and more towards being shooters rather than rpgs.
ME 3's ending is horrible. That is NOT debatable. In fact, there's much evidence that it isn't even the ending the series was originally supposed to have.
