I just ordered another Dreamcast (Version 1) console
I checked the back of my console and it tells me it's version 2. What is the different between the 2? I suppose Version 2 came after Version 1. I had to order another one because it seems like my Version 2 console is having trouble reading discs. I actually played Copied games on my Version 2 console, so I was wondering if that had anything with the the CD drive dying out on me.

Yes, if the media you used was cheap, or the burn was bad, or even the rip was poor, it really stresses the GD-Rom. My recommendation is to use legit discs, either way the drive will eventually die, but burned discs make it go faster.JC48573 wrote:I checked the back of my console and it tells me it's version 2. I thought the 2 ones couldn't read CD-Rs at all? Was that only a later batch of them?

well, I stopped doing it long ago. I do run boot discs to play legit games from other regions.Kidpanda wrote:Yes, if the media you used was cheap, or the burn was bad, or even the rip was poor, it really stresses the GD-Rom. Mine was the earlier batch of Version 2, but I suppose they made it so that it will struggle to read CD-Rs.Gunstar Green wrote:I thought the 2 ones couldn't read CD-Rs at all? Was that only a later batch of them?

October or November 2000 is when the version 2 ones got a bit trickier.

Lets cut to the chase regarding Rev 2 models and back ups. Said models will indeed play backups BUT its NOT recommended that you do so in my opinion. Rev 2 GD drives are absolutely the worst when it comes down to reliability and build quality. They just are. They were built cheap perhaps as a means to save on manufacturing costs. They are also not interchangable in parts with the 2 other console revisions, if you wish to swap out the Drive on Rev2 with more common GD drives found on Rev 0 or 1. Heck, I dont even think its compatible with a GDEMU that was recently concieved. Play GD rom retail games on it to make last as long as possible. Use previous consoles revisions for quality backups.

Supposedly some version 2 dont play ripped games. I have a version 2 that plays them with no problem. From what i hear iths the later batch of the version 2 that supposedly cant play them but these are supposedly few. I played the snot out of my launch dreamcast an while i did have problems with it i did adjust the laser to get it working again that is unitl just recently. I recently downloaded a copy of Frogger which was causing the drive mechanism to work double Overtime. I played it maybe 3 times and knew i could not continue to play this game much longer as it was going to wear out the drive. I then found a better (ripped) optimized version of it. I sometimes buy the actual retail version of the game. Im also going to put my Dreamcast(s) on rotation. The consoles are so cheap its worth to have a 2nd unit. If you have such a game i can certainly see the drive been worn out. This maybe just me but anything that is more than 1 CD long i just buy the retail version.
