Nintendo's lack of diversity

Post by jvalentine98 »

Recently there's been an uproar that there are no black or brown human characters in Mario Kart 8. And really, all of Nintendo's major human characters are white, or are Italian and appear to have white skin. (Mario, Luigi, Link, Zelda's a white chick...)

So is this "damn Japanese white supremacists" or what? Does it bother you that it's 2014 and we don't have a black/brown character yet?

Are you one of those people who thinks anime characters are white?
Nintendo does have a transgender character (Birdo) and has way more female options than most. Hard to fault a Japanese company as much as an American company but I do see your point and having more PoC in Nintendo games would be a good thing especially as it would mean new IPs from them.

I have no prob with Nintendo's characters, I merely presented the fact that they don't have a black or brown human character and asked if bothered anyone?

As silly as it seems, what if you are a black or brown child and you ask your parents why don't any of them look like you? How do you handle that? We were playing a basketball game recently and my 5 year old nephew asked me why most of the players were black. I said well most basketball players are black (which is true).

I'm coming in here thinking that "diversity" meant a lack of game play innovation in some of there games. But its that "diversity". Oh boy.

Look listen: Nintendo is a company that was created in Japan. They create games for a Japanese audience. These games are created by Japanese people. They may only know the culture that they live in to find inspration.

Nintendo, its studios, other gaming studios, and other studios that create other forms of media such as movies and shows as well as anime are created for there own market that get translated to other markets. The original work is a display of their own culture. It is not as diverse as, say, the five boroughs of New York City.

Link to an article would be much appreciated.

Wikipedia wrote:"The Legend of Zelda was principally inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto's explorations as a young boy in the hillsides surrounding his childhood home in Sonobe, Japan where he ventured into forests with secluded lakes, caves, and rural villages. According to Miyamoto, one of his most memorable experiences was the discovery of a cave entrance in the middle of the woods. After some hesitation, he apprehensively entered the cave, and explored its depths with the aid of a lantern. Miyamoto has referred to the creation of the Zelda games as an attempt to bring to life a "miniature garden" for players to play with in each game of the series."
