Group is going to excavate the Atari landfill

It's going to be a part of a documentary.

I don't know if this has been posted so I apologize if it has.

One of the things that I always found interesting about gaming is the weird history that is attached with the hobby. It shows how the industry was incredibly optimistic and then the change that came with the crash. I hope the dig really does happen and that they find something.

Per eyewitness accounts the hardware was crushed and covered with concrete, so it is just dust. Regardless, they were buried in 1983/1984, and the landfill was closed in 1994. So you have atleast 10 years of garbage ontop of it. Honestly this is just silly.

I have to agree, plus what's the absolute best case scenario? The eyewitnesses were full of it and someone unearths thousands of copies of a common Atari game, all caked in dirt. Yyyyyeah

It will be interesting to say the least but entirely a waste of time and money. Have 6 copies sitting right here the only games I find more often then E.T. are Defender, Asteroids, and Missile Command, and Yars' Revenge.

The only reason to dig these up is to make sure they were destroyed thoroughly.

I think it is somewhat interesting, considering that the E.T. landfill is a story of legend and the game itself is a highlight to the game collapse in the 80's. There is more of a story than just the landfill itself. Instead, it is about why that game ended up there and what it represented in the gaming industry.

Yeah they won't find anything there...that's fine, but it isn't always about the destination.
