Gameboy Player region lock

I have a US Indigo GameCube and would like a matching gameboy player. I understand the indigo player was only released in Japan. I was wondering though, do I need a US or Japanese disc?

Will the Japanese disc work on my US GameCube? Would a US disc work with a Japanese player?

I have that exact set up, indigo player on the US indigo Gamecube. It works perfectly with the US gameboy player disc.
