Remove Sharpie off 12+ year old DC games (textured surface)

Post by Mad_Hatter »

Usually I can take Sharpie marks off of CDs with a little bit of rubbing alcohol.

However, I found these old dreamcast games (MK Gold and NBA Showtime) that I am having a pain taking the writing off. I believe it is because (1) the games had that Sharpie written on them for so long and (2) these games have that textured surface.

I have tried rubbing alcohol, GooGone. And I tried using a Dry Eraser Marker over the Sharpie marks and erasing it. No luck. It went away a little bit, but it is still noticeable.

I don't want to continue doing this because eventually I am just going to ruin the game art on the CD (GD-R actually  )

Anyone have any other tricks?

Try alcohol with a white vinyl eraser while it's wet. In my experience though, some marker/plastic combinations just refuse to come off. I have some carts and discs I've cleaned and you can't tell it was ever there. Some are stubborn and refuse to go away or the printing on the disc starts coming off so I've just had to live with it.

Are you using 91% rubbing alcohol. It works a lot better than the 70%

Random Question: For cleaning games or discs has anyone Mr Clean Magic Eraser? Is it effective at all? Just wondering because they are usually really awesome at cleaning marker, paint and pen marks off of walls and floors in my experience.

Yea I was thinking of this as well. But I heard that thing is too strong. I've heard stories of it removing logos off of consoles. I would think it will remove the art on a CD. I might try it out on a CD with little to no value.

As an aside, I actually use contact cleaner for marker and goo removal as well as contact cleaning instead of alcohol. It's more expensive, but it usually works well and then I only have one cleaner sitting on my desk.

As for that Magic Eraser on CD's, agree it might remove the label. Keep in mind that thin layer of paint/dye is the only protection to the data underneath. The read side is actually more durable with a layer of clear plastic.

Try LiftOff 2 from Home Depot. It has similar properties to Goo Gone but maybe a little stronger. Contact Cleaner is some serious stuff designed to clean thru metal, have care with it on plastics.
