Sega Saturn Game Shark.

Post by Caleb »

I was rummaging around a bin of Genesis games at a pawn shop the other day and I found a Game Shark for the Sega Saturn.

Besides running game cheats what else can it do?

Does it have any space for backup saves?

Can you use it to play imports?

Thanks a bunch!

I think I remember seeing someone here in the forum saying that, although it was not advertised, it could indeed boot imports, but I'm not sure. Never had one of those myself :(

Found it!

That's pretty sweet!

Play import titles:
Follow this procedure to defeat the internal territorial protection and play a Japanese or European game on a North American Saturn. Turn the Saturn on with an import disc in the drive. Select the "Start Game" option from the Game Shark main menu. Highlight the "Start Game Without Enhancements" option, hold X + Y + Z and press Start. The game will boot normally. Note: Some European games will have a small amount of the top and bottom of the screen cropped.

Note: This works with all imports except a few games that require extra RAM, such as Metal Slug and X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

I have to try it out, I got one a couple years ago and it didn't boot imports (didn't know about holding the buttons then) and it made furious, ended up getting an ST Key

I've had one for years but I've never owned an import so I can't say if it works or not. You can bet I'll try it if I ever find an import I can't live without.

It does also act as a memory cart. One quirk though is that it compresses the files to provide more storage space but this means you can't save games directly to the cart from the game saves within the game itself and you can't start games from saves on the cart from within the game itself. You can copy saves to the cart then copy them back to the Saturn memory at a later date and they work fine.

Some games hate the cart enough (such as Panzer Dragoon Saga) that if you start the game with the Game Shark in the cart slot it will tell you to remove the cart before the game will boot. That said, I have used it to cheat on a couple of games and it worked as advertised. Strangely enough the games I cheated on (infinite health) were Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon II.

I use an Action Replay (not the 4M plus version). It works perfectly, and I got it for a great price... free. The only annoying thing about it is it's a pain in the ass to get out of the saturn, which is weird because my Netlink goes in and out easy.
