How Do I Transfer Data? (PS3)

Post by oxymoron »

I'm in a similar situation as MrEco. Like him, I am dangerously low on HDD space and need a new upgrade. My question to you guys is how do I transfer all my data from the old HDD to the new one? I do have PS+. I don't really have anything other than gamesaves and a couple game soundtracks on my PS3. Also, could you guys recommend me a 500GB HDD? Thanks.

Far as I know, there isn't a way to directly transfer stuff to a new drive.

Playstation Plus gives you a limited amount of cloud storage for PS3 saves, so that's one option, if you then want to redownload or reinstall everything else too.

The more streamlined, though still time consuming way is to utilize the backup utility, which will give you a backup on a third drive that you can then restore to the new drive after you swap it in, putting everything back exactly like it was.

This is the drive I bought for mine, though I believe it's been replaced.

Could I put the new HDD into an enclosure and use backup utility to put everything on there? If that doesn't work I'm probably just going to put all the gamesaves on a usb and then copy them to the new HDD. The downside is have to download all those damn patches again.

If you have a proper PC and some SATA cables, you can easily clone your hard disc. I did that when my boot drive started to crap itself - I bought a larger hard disc and cloned the old disc to a parition of the new drive.

Can't do it that way, unfortunately. The drive gets wiped as part of the setup process, and linked to that specific PS3. Additionally, it's not like with PSP backups where you just have the folder structure copied over. It's an archive format of some kind broken into 4GB parts (max file size for FAT32), so it's only really good for restoring with the PS3's utility.

For whatever reason, I'd assumed you could put the old drive in a dock and import it a la the OS X Migration tool, and found that you can't. The back up/restore using a third drive method is what I begrudgingly found to be my only option when I did it.

The backup drive doesn't get wiped though, and most externals come formatted in FAT32 anyway due to compatibility. So if you can find one around that has enough space, it's really not too bad a process.

Cloning a HDD in general is not that hard. Cloning an encrypted/DRM'ed drive to a larger size is perhaps a bit trickier. I've seen mixed things regarding it for PS3 drives.

As isiolia mentioned, you can't do this process with one HDD.

The way I did it was:
  • Buy a HDD you plan to upgrade to
Find a spare harddrive you don't care for (ie, copy all the data off to a PC temporarily)
Plug spare HDD into the PS3 USB ports, run the Backup Utility
Unplug spare HDD, remove factory HDD from PS3, and insert new upgrade HDD
    Boot system
Accept to format the upgrade HDD
After rebooting the system, plug in spare HDD
    Restore backup to PS3
Bam, all your content is preserved, no need to download patches again
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

How would you do that?

EDIT:
So it is possible to just copy everything you need onto a USB and just copy that onto the new HDD. It's tedious but possible, right?

Double Edit:
I just had an idea. Could you use backup utility to do a backup onto the PS4?

Right. I linked to the Sony support page detailing the Backup utility above. It's a very simple process, it just takes a while because USB 2.0 is relatively slow and you're presumably talking about copying 100+ GB of data.

Once you put the new drive in, and do initial setup, you can use the Backup->Restore to then put everything back in place. Again, very simple process, just be prepared to have it take hours.

It does a great job of transferring your system to a new drive. It just takes having a third drive to put the backup data on temporarily.

I doubt it. The Backup utility is set up to dump a backup to a FAT32 formatted drive hooked up over USB. That's it.
