Wii & DS servers being shut down on May 20th
As the title says, Nintendo is shutting down it's online servers for both Wii and DS. I know online wasn't a primary focus for these consoles, but there are still a fair number of games where it's used. All features in games that require connecting online will no longer work. This includes some popular games like Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Pokémon.
The Wii shop and the DSi shop will continue to work.
You can find lists of online enabled games on Wikipedia that are pretty comprehensive.
I personally will be trying to get as much downloadable content as I can before it all disappears, as well as trying to finish so stuff requiring online in a few games. Stuff like:
1. Downloading all the free downloadable puzzles on all 4 Professor Layton games
2. Downloading the maximum of 50 free songs on Jam with the Band
3. Donwloading the 15 free books on 100 Classic Book Collection.
4. Finishing the Mognet quest on Final Fantasy 3.
5. Trading for a Genesect (the last legendary I need) on Pokémon White.
Other stuff worth noting:
Warioware DIY on DS and Blastworks on Wii will not be able to access user made content. Best grab as much as you can right away.

Re: Wii & DS servers being shut down on May 30th
I know I asked this in the past, but it was a bit more hypothetical at the time. Now that there's a date, I just want to confirm: Netflix will still work on Wii right?
If no, then
(A) I'm going to kick some chairs.
(B) Anybody want to buy a Wii?

This will be a problem to the pokemon players out there who didn't jump on board with X and Y (I was not a fan of them). You can still do local multiplayer battling and trading though so I would assume that LAN tunneling can still work right?

The fact that DLC is going away is bullshit
I understand that as demand diminishes, paying for server upkeep is unnecessary. However, they should move those items to the eShop. I find it ridiculous that I won't be able to finish quests or access extra content on my games because the servers are gone. Multiplayer interaction is completely understandable, but game content shouldn't be affected IMO.

Why do you want to stream from the Wii when it doesn't support HD video?noiseredux wrote:I know I asked this in the past, but it was a bit more hypothetical at the time. Now that there's a date, I just want to confirm: Netflix will still work on Wii right?

To add to my last post regarding the cost of server upkeep:
Nintendo could virtualize these servers, possibly along with a few other servers that are getting a bit long in the tooth. That will allow them to continue support of these server while condensing them all down to a single machine. The cost of upkeep drops significantly and it could keep features alive for quite a while longer. Granted, there is still a cost associated with this, mainly IT personnel and the upkeep of the one machine. But, I would venture to say that Nintendo already has an IT department at the location that their servers are located, so that cost is already being paid.

Well, that stinks. Here's the official story:

Admittedly, I haven't played any of those online recently, but it's still sad to see that functionality go. Netflix will still work, thankfully. The Wii Speak, on the other hand, will be completely useless.
On an unrelated topic, does anyone want to buy a Wii Speak?

Thank goodness, I have a Wii hooked up to an SD TV in the bedroom for just this purpose. I've never played a game on it.Duane Dibbley wrote: Netflix will still work, thankfully.

I use the Wii for Netflix because it supports multiple profiles, and my Blu-ray player doesn't. The Wii also seems to handle buffering more smoothly.BoringSupreez wrote:Why do you want to stream from the Wii when it doesn't support HD video?
