So I Almost Beat NSLU in a Single Sitting Last Night but...

Post by Jamisonia »

I've owned this game since the physical copies first released but never got the chance to play it. Popped in yesterday since I was off work for the snowday in DC. Never have I finished a game the first time I ever played it, but yesterday was the closest I've ever come.

Got through every world, didn't skip any on my way to Bowser. I got to the last world, and by this time I was starting to play badly due to a combination of a very sore left thumb and general frustration. You know how your play starts to slip as you make dumb mistakes, causing you to make more mistakes and slip even further. At one point I thought my thumbnail might come off. But I persevered.

Finally I got to the last level. Ready to beat this, thinking wow I've never finished a game the very first time I played it. Outside the snow started up again, furiously. Only instead of the dry powder we received before this was a wet sleet. I get to Bowser, quickly run under him and drop him down. Luigi stands there very proud of himself saying "I'm a winner" as though the poor guy has to convince himself of this. Kamek comes and drops her magic to revive Bowser. I'm sweating, my palms are barely holding onto the GamePad. I have to pee, but I also have to beat this game. And then..... the power goes out.

I scream. So loud my neighbors can hear me. The Wii U GamePad illuminates my dark house making that disconnection beep, as though its screaming to me what happened, what happened. Pepco (our power company) took something from me yesterday. The power didn't come back on until sometime in the middle of the night and today I'm at work, knowing I have unfinished business at home. Alas I have never beat a game the first time I've encountered it. I suppose Bowser won this round, and he didn't even need Kamek to help him do it. All I can this is, this wouldn't have happened to Mario.

Ahhhhhh!!!!! Power outages are the worst.

I seem to lose power about twice a month, usually for several hours. I check the weather forecast and stick to handhelds on the nights of big storms. 8)

I feel your pain. It has happened to me on several occasions, mostly because I used to live in the boonies. The worst is when it flickers, but just enough to reset the console. And it always seems to happen on boss levels...

When I was living with my parents I had a battery backup power strip for my TV and consoles. It didn't give power long enough to keep playing, but if it was only a power flicker everything would survive and if the power was off for good, it lasted long enough to save the game. If you live in the boonies that's a worthwhile investment.

Dude that sucks. Saw your post over on reddit too.

Luckily I haven't had the misfortune of this happening to me anytime recently. I have lived in heavily populated urban areas for several years now. I know it used to happen in the foothills a lot. I think that's how I got my save-nutty behavior.

When I was young we once went 2+ weeks without power. Had a TV and SNES w/ Donkey Kong Country hooked to the gas generator. Kept everyone entertained and amused. Even my parents.

On the plus side...at least you saved.....I mean...you did save right?

That does suck though. When the power goes out, I don't mind too much. My wife and I bust out the candles and playing cards or a board game and enjoy ourselves. That was me as a kid too. I loved power outages, because we all got to have family time and play board games.

I have one now. I learned my lesson after replaying through Legend of Dragoon and being in the sequence that would have killed the final boss and it flickering like that. Thankfully they have gotten much better in that area now. It won't go out when the wind gusts

if I got power outages that many power outages I'd consider getting one of those rechargeable power supplies that holds power for a few minutes when the power goes out. I wish I knew what they were called.
