Monitor shock is real; or how learned what I thought I knew
My Astro has been acting up and after a lot of reading - I'm pretty sure the flyback is going. I read a few articles that said the same thing and all involved cleaning off the area around the ferrite coil, or perhaps simply uninstalling the flyback and repositioning it.
As these monitors are known for their power and to literally kill people - it is recommended to discharge them before working on them. I unplugged it about 3 weeks ago and removed the monitor today. I carefully removed the flyback to full discharge, looked everything over, did some cleaning and reseated it. Put everything back together except the monitor hood.
I turned it on and voila, had my picture back, then a high pitched whistle, then monitor went wonky again. I reached back behind the monitor instinctively - as if to make sure an AC cable was properly position, but this is a flyback, not an AV cable, the microsecond I touched the rubber area on the flyback "ZAP!" and my body literally, yes Luke, literally, flew across the room and I landed about 8' away from the cab, my finger burnt, palm covered in smoke and in pain all over. Most of the pain quickly went away except in my left testicle. My wife had come running down when she heard the zap and then the thud. My heart racing - I told her I thought one of my testicles has exploded. It felt cold and wet - she quick got the kids out of there and I checked it out. I burst at least 3 blood vessels in the area, but appears intact othewise. Heart is still racing as I type this up.
I know we already know this - but there is nothing like experiencing it to truly understand the power of these monitors. Wow.

oh Mike, go to the doctor NOW! you may have an irregular beat due to the shock and really should be checked out by a physician. This is no joke man.

Glad to hear you are okay.
Side Note: Thanks for clarifying which testicle, that would have bothered me for days if I had to guess.
