^^

The CDZ power adaptor is rated as follows:

*POWCD-J2*
AC 100V 50/60Hz 38VA
DC 5V 1A
DC 10V 1A

The CD Toploader is:

*POWCD-J*
AC 100V 50/60Hz 55VA
DC 5V 2A
DC 10V 1A

I've always taken it for granted that the power supply for the Top Loader can be safely used on the CDZ, but not the other way around.

Yeah, the other specs are fine, but toploader wants twice as much amperage on the 5 volt line. The CDZ power supply will not be happy being asked for twice the oomph and could blow up at any time if it worked at all. When using a different power supply, check the outputs of the power brick and what the console asks for. Voltage and polarity should be the same, though a variation of less than 10% on the voltage will probably be fine as long as the device and power brick are quality components and you are not using them in hot conditions. The amperage of the power brick should be the same or higher than what the console asks for. The console will only pull as much amperage as it needs. Think of amperage like horsepower in your car. If you live somewhere flat, both a Yugo and a hot rod truck will haul you and groceries just fine, it will just be overkill for the groceries. Towing a boat on a trailer will just kill the Yugo.

*edit, fixed W/A wording in first sentence*
