Famicom

Post by Tweekers237 »

I was clearing out some things in my moms attic a month or 2 ago and I came across some old Famicom/Super Famicom games that I bought for some reason at a Convention years ago. It's only about 10 games total and it's kind of created a problem for myself in regards to my slight retro fascination/addiction.

I think the reason I got them was because they were retro items from Japan and completely new to me. My anticipation for the Retron 5 is completely burning a hole in my brain (and potentially my wallet) to get into the Japanese side of Nintendo.

As a result I've been surfing Ebay for Famicom products. Particularily the systems. Its interesting that SFamicom system are cheaper than SNES. Most Famicom systems are pretty disgusting looking so I'm hesitant to actually get one. I've been eyeing up TwinFamicoms also which incorporate the disk system which is also pretty cool.

TL;DR, is there anyone out there who is also into the Famicom? Can you suggest some good games for a non Japanese speaker? Maybe also some pros and cons to the systems themselves, and any recommendations would be awesome.

Thanks.

I've got a healthy Famicom collection, and there are some great games to look out for that never made their way over here. I would start a list, but quite honestly these lists have been done over many times, and a quick Google search will turn up plenty of well written lists. I would also recommend checking out the series Chrontendo on YouTube for a well done comprehensive review of titles. The YouTube show Famicom Dojo also has some entertaining videos.

In terms of hardware, I would recommend going with either an AV Famicom or a Twin Famicom. I've got both and a standard Famicom, and I use the AV most. I use a standard FDS with it, and the reason I prefer it most is that you can use any standard US NES controller, as well as the Famicom accessories.

There are plenty of resources out there. If you're in the market for more games, I would also recommend Japan Retro Direct. You can find his page on Facebook, and his sales are here: http://www.gamegavel.com/sites/famicomvinnk/

You should also check famicomworld.com. Lots of good folks, and reputable sellers over there.

Have fun collecting for the most awesome system ever!

Depends on what you like. I really dig (you'll get that in a second) old arcade games, so I was nuts (another) for getting Galaxian, Mappy, Nuts and Milk, and Dig Dug II. If shmups are your thing, Gradius II is hard and excellent. Just be warned that there are tons and tons of mediocre stuff that never made it across the Pacific for good reason. I've been burned on a few games that turned out to be absolute tosh.

I put my hand on an extra Super famicom, if you want it it's yours. as for famicom, the regular is worth about 30$ and the av famicom is way pricier. I live in Japan, so if you want my superfamicom for free, simply cover the transportation fees. if you want a famicom, message me, ill find one for you in goood shape

I've got an AV Famicom and a FDS and I love them both. I went from a normal NES, to a top-loader NES, to finally an AV Famicom and each step of the way I found the quality improved. I've considered getting a Twin Famicom, but mainly for the looks. The AV Famicom gives me a lot of terrific features with only minimal draw backs. I like the top loading style and obviously the AV output, but I also really like the compatibility with NES controllers. Meaning I can unplug the controllers from the system and use an extender if I need to.

I try to only buy MIB famicom games, which gets pretty pricey. I kinda stopped buying Famicom games after buying a copy of Gimmick! that set me back quite a bit, but the desire to collect more is still there.
