Final Fantasy IX - Tetra Master (card mini-game): mandatory to play, but not mandatory to win; excellent prize for winning

The Worst Obtrusive Mini-Games
After seeing this comment and thinking earlier today about FFIX, I think we could definitely use an ultimate list of games with obtrusive mini-games. These are mini-games that break the flow of the main game and are either entirely unavoidable or are shoved in your face.

Karaoke in Sleeping Dogs, damn that was stupid and if memory serves some of it is mandatory.

GTA: San Andreas, every stupid remote RC Helicopter mission, with the hard to move camera. Not needed.

Made me stop playing it LOL. I just wreaked havoc in the city after getting angry at it.emwearz wrote:GTA: San Andreas, every stupid remote RC Helicopter mission, with the hard to move camera. Not needed.

I dont really see the problem with the FFIX mini game. It's compulsory for a whole 15 minutes of a 40 hour game and you don't even need to win

I'm going to mention the Baseball minigame in LoZ: ALBW. While you only have to play it if you want all the heart pieces most people would consider that mandatory in a Zelda title.
Re: The Worst Obtrusive Mini-Games
Worst mini game forced upon the player has to be Final Fantasy X blitz ball.

Re: The Worst Obtrusive Mini-Games
I have to disagree. Blitzball, like Tetra Master, is only forced upon you once, and you don't have to win. You could just go to the bathroom and never experience Blitzball again. It hardly feels intrusive, and certainly can't be the worst offender in this category.
But what do I know, I liked blitzball. At least its possible to deduce a ruleset when playing your first round. I STILL don't understand Tetra Master.

We all have different levels of tolerance. Tetra Master is mentioned all the damned time, you're constantly getting cards as items, even special items, and then you're forced to play it, winning means getting a cool item. I'd say that's pretty obtrusive, in that it's very prominent, unwelcome, and intrusive. I don't imagine everyone will agree with me, but that's why I mentioned the level of mandatory-ness in the OP, so that people will know what to expect.alienjesus wrote:I dont really see the problem with the FFIX mini game. Re: The Worst Obtrusive Mini-Games
Not sure this counts as a mini-game, but any time a straight-up action game decides to have a stealth segment that doesn't fit at all with the flow of the rest of the game.
