Best PSN Games

Post by Dougtron »

I finally took the plunge and got a PS3 about a year ago. I'm looking for recommendations on the best PSN games that aren't just HD ports of older games; remakes, such as Bionic Commando: Rearmed, are fine though. I remember reading about some pretty cool sounding games over the year but I've forgotten about a lot of them and some of them I can't remember if they were on PSN or XBLA. ALso they don't have to be exclusive to PSN, as there are lots of games on PSN that are on Steam as well, I just prefer to play gmaes on consoles. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hmm, I don't remember if we ever had a list for this.

For PSN, there are plenty, from Jenova Chen's Flower and Journey (both are higher on artistic side), Shatter - with its techno beats, the twin-stick shooters Super Stardust and Dead Nation...

It does depends on your taste.

Papo and Yo was pretty amazing.

It has since been ported to the PC and has been as low as $1 on it, so if you have a PC, might be a cheaper option.

Limbo

It's also available for PC and 360, though.

I'll only be listing non-on-disk games. This is PS3 only, right? I'd have more to say about PSP and Vita. Don't forget about cheap PS1, PS2, Neo Geo, and PC Engine classics!

Some of my favorites:

Echochrome
WipEout HD Fury
Acceleration of Suguri X (also PC)
Beat Hazard Ultra
Beyond Good and Evil HD
Fat Princess
Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgement
Mega Man 9
NovaStrike
Super Stardust HD
Mamorukun Curse
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (superseded by 6 and Tag 2)
Tsun tsun dere tsun dere tsun tsun~ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . UPDATED trade list

there are a surprisingly few number of PSN games that are

A) PS3 exclusive (not on PC, PSP, Vita, or another console)
B) not available on disc

-Guacamelee - Fantastic Metroid/beat 'em up hybrid
-Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty - It's Ratchet and Clank light, but that's still pretty awesome
-Hotline Miami - Hard to describe, it's basically a top down stealth game, but with some beat 'em up and shooter elements. It's very violent, very retro in its 8-bit inspired presentation(and amazing 80s soundtrack)and very much inspired by the movie Drive. The fact that your character and every enemy in the game dies in one hit makes the game an intense, adrenaline pumping experience.
-Stick it to the Man - It's like a PC Adventure game, with some platforming and stealth mixed in. It's great if you love Time Schaefer games.
-Bentley's Hack Pack - All the mini-games from Sly Thieves in Time expanded upon for more fun and challenge
-Tokyo Jungle - A cutesy survival game where you play as an animal and try to overcome the threats and obstacles of nature and the animal kingdom for as long as you can, unlocking more powerful animals and offspring the more you play
-Rain - Artsy stealth game, lost interest in it myself but others like it
-Dead Nation - Top down shooter where you blast zombies

Excellent list.. Mamorukun Curse is a great 3D Shmup and I still need to check out the Vandal Hearts HD update!
