Registration issues December 2013

Post by fastbilly1 »

Due to a massive spammer attack to the forum, registration is closed for the time being. If you are not a spammer and wish to start an account please contact the administration at the below link with your preferred username and the email address for account.

We will build accounts as fast as we can so hopefully we will not have much of a delay.

Sorry for the trouble.

Fast, not sure if my issue is somehow related to (or caused by) the registration thing but I'll post anyway.

I mostly browse this site on a tablet and as soon as I enter the forum I get directed to the mobile version of the site. Well screw the mobile version; I always select the "view full version" link at the bottom of the page and I'm good to go. But tonight I discovered that the link to the full site is missing... Uh, did it get moved or something? I had to do a google search to get in the regular version of the site.

Anybody else using a mobile device have the same issue I'm having?

Yes, I no longer see the Full Site link either.

Fast, not sure if my issues is related, but... I'm not getting email notifications on new PMs, even though I've always had that setting in my profile. After I noticed, I double checked, and I'm still configured to receive emails but I'm not getting them.

I'm not hollering to get it fixed asap, I'll be fine without it for now since I mostly check the forums at least once a day. I'm just curious.

edit: I just noticed, my PM emails notifications are going into my spam folder. Perhaps it has to do with the recent spammer attack? I have Gmail, so maybe they added that address to auto junk?

Same here. I never check my spam folder I thought I broke something.

Same here. Started about a month ago for me. And likewise, it's not a huge deal as I'm on the forums every day, but I did like those emails.

I don't have any sort of spam folder, I simply don't receive the notifications at all.

Still getting my notification emails to my gmail inbox.

On topic, sadly phpbb is one of the top forum softwares targeted by spam bot programs. Their captchas were cracked years ago, and some bots can even generate their own verification link from the e-mail they're supposed to have to receive.

Even on my relatively inactive form, I still had to put several security measures in place. Blocking IP's was a total waste of time... The things I found the most effective were dropping UTC -1200 registrations (baker island time; nobody lives here but bots pick it all the time) and having an extra non-captcha verification question. It has to be an actual question, a lot of bots look for math problems and the like, and can solve them.

Another good one is adding a POST variable that bots will see but users will not. In other words, an input field in the source that doesn't get displayed in normal browsers. Bots try to fill everything out, so if there's anything in it, you can drop that registration.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

Checking my spam folder, my notification emails have been going to spam since 11/28. It might have started earlier than that, but I haven't received a lot of PM in a while since before that date so I can't be sure.

The issue with the mobile device/full site is related, and should be fixed soon.

The issue with PMs not sending emails is new to me. I will take a look at it today.
