Yeah. He was a very influential person.
I read some articles on him already.
So sad.

Re: Nelson Mandela 1918-2013
Not many outside of SA would be aware of this but the word here is that Mandela's been technically dead a lot longer. He's been on a ventilator but his brain has been dead for a while now.
So why choose to turn the machines off now instead of the many months ago?
Speculative possibilities:
-Better for the economy to have the days of mourning (holidays) while schools are closed and many people already in holiday?
-Take attention off Nkandlagate?
-Take the spotlight off e-tolls? Probably the ANC's biggest voter challenge to date.
-Go ahead for early elections in 2014?
Whatever the reason, it is a very sad day, and I echo R.I.P Madiba, finally at peace.

I knew he was in the hospital for quite a while but I hadn't heard he was brain dead.Thierry Henry wrote:Not many outside of SA would be aware of this but the word here is that Mandela's been technically dead a lot longer. He's been on a ventilator but his brain has been dead for a while now.

I didn't know that either. I hope he went without pain and peacefully.BoringSupreez wrote:I knew he was in the hospital for quite a while but I hadn't heard he was brain dead.Thierry Henry wrote:Not many outside of SA would be aware of this but the word here is that Mandela's been technically dead a lot longer. Isn't it interesting that the US/UK/Israel were the last to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime? Anyway I hope SA eventually overcomes its current challenges, something which might require young visionary leaders.

Nelson Mandela was listed as a terrorist by the US government until 2008.Pulsar_t wrote:Isn't it interesting that the US/UK/Israel were the last to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime? That said, you should probably also consider who colonized the nation, how they would respond to their former colony as a nation, and which nations were heavily allied with that particular founder at the time. If the UK is on good terms with a terrible nation, then allied nations like the US and Israel will have no desire to rock the boat. The US perception is that the UK is absolutely necessary as an ally, and the Israeli perception is that allies like the US and UK are absolutely necessary for its continued survival.

Too bad the country spent a vast amount of its money building stadiums for the last World Cup. I'm certain that didn't help the existing economic disparities in the country.Pulsar_t wrote:Isn't it interesting that the US/UK/Israel were the last to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime? And his organization counted among its supporters the communist USSR. We did not like Mandela or his organization, so we supported the apartheid government almost to the very end.Ack wrote:Nelson Mandela was listed as a terrorist by the US government until 2008.Pulsar_t wrote:Isn't it interesting that the US/UK/Israel were the last to impose sanctions on the apartheid regime? Mandela was very critical of the US even long afterwards. And I valued his critiques. It is always good to have someone important and influential who has actively worked for freedom and equality to help keep you honest.
