Games worth getting an xbox 360 for?

Post by Valkyrie-Favor »

Are there any?

I've already got a PS3 and I plan on building a gaming PC later, but a 4GB Xbox 360 slim will be $99 at Wal-Mart on Friday. Any games you feel would be worth picking up the system for?

I know there are lots of cool exclusive shmups, but just the PS1 and PS2 will keep me busy there for a lifetime.

While getting one with more storage might be good, one angle is that there was a period near the beginning of the generation where MS was paying to publish JRPGs, or otherwise getting them exclusive. Lost Odyssey is probably the prime reason there, but you do have Infinite Undiscovery and the Last Remnant that are still console-exclusive (there are PC versions), Tales of Vesperia that was 360-only outside of Japan, and other oddities like Blue Dragon, Magna Carta II, or Operation Darkness that are exclusives as well.

Wasn't just JRPGs, really, I'd say a lot of the more interesting exclusives for the 360 were earlier titles...which can be an advantage as so many are bargain bin fodder now.

This list should give a decent idea.

I've seen the list already (thanks by the way). I was hoping for feedback from those who had actually played the 360 exclusive games.

Manga Carta II looks somewhat interesting...

The 360 will rival the SATURN and PCE regarding exclusive shmup releases in a few years time as people look back and start to discover the games they missed out on. If that is a genre you enjoy - for $99, a new console is a no-brainer.

I second this.

Lost Odyssey is a really, really good game in my opinion. It feels like a souped up PS1 era JRPG in a very good way.

Last Remnant has issues with slowdown from what I hear and is therefore best ripped onto the system, which won't be possible if you go for the 4gig 360. It runs better on PC.

Infinite Undiscovery is a very poor game IMO. Bland visuals and music coupled with mediocre gameplay and cliche boring characters. It also includes the worst child characters ever in a game. Seriously, they suck and are borderline creepy.

If you go online you can grab some great arcade titles like Shadow Complex, Mark of the Ninja, Trials HD and State of Decay, though some are also on PC.

And, you know, Halo, Gears and Fable.

Doesn't matter if you get a slow-writing USB drive, the read speeds are what matters. You can go up to 32GB per stick. Good for multi-disc games.

Thanks, I'd totally forgotten you could do that. Why do I get the feeling a lot of our future game collections are going to be on USB's we've dropped down the back of a cupboard or in a draw somewhere.

If you aren't building a PC for a while check out The Witcher 2 on 360. The port is really fantastic, easily one of the best looking games on the system, on top of being an excellent action RPG in every way.

If you want an awesome open world sandbox game check out Crackdown as well. It was an early title, but it still looks and plays really well. Super good for your super-hero crime-stomping fix.

I'll second Lost Odyssey, as both a really big Valkyrie Profile and Final Fantasy fan. If I'm not mistaken, you are a JRPG fan.

I agree with what Sload Soap said, it really brings you back in the day to how JRPGs used to be. Pretty much plays just like a classic Final Fantasy game, a very good one at that. Music is great, the characters are memorable, the story is engaging, solid battle system, you really can't go wrong with this one.

Worth buying a system for? As much as I obviously liked the game, I would probably have to say no. It's good, but not system seller good, in my opinion at least. Unless maybe you are looking to turn around and sell it immediately after finishing the game or something.

With so many of the previously exclusive 360 RPGs coming to PC and PS3, there is very little for the RPG fan (exclusively) on the 360 anymore. Obviously a goldmine for the bullet hell fan though.
