Hello everyone.
I am new to these boards but I love RPG's. I guess I am stuck in the past as I dont own any of the newer consoles(PS3/360/wii/wiiu/vita etc).
I love RPG's of all kinds though action/turn based are my choice types.
I dont have many consoles anymore and the only one I have I use is my magic 3.1 modded PS2 w/ HDD. I use it mostly to play my imported PS2/PS1 games. I am hoping to find some more games here eventually once my noob status wears off.
Anyway, I was just wondering which PSX/PS2 RPG's you guys could suggest I look into? I love the tales of series and I hope to pick those up, but what else would you guys suggest? I recently picked up Dragon Quest VII, FF 8, and Soukaigi for PSX and I have played through Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix for PS2 (working on RE: Chain of memories).
What games would you think I should try and find and pick up that were japanese released? I am learning japanese so I can understand very little so far of what is said but that doesn't deter me as i can read menu's ok and distinguish characters names.
I hope to find some games here as I said but aside from that what games would you guys suggest? I hope to find FFX International for sure...but anyway, I would love to discuss JP region RPG's here and get info/reactions from you guys as well!
Also, besides ebay(as I dont use/have paypal) are there any sites you could recommend that have JP games I could buy? I would be looking to trade for now though if I were to deal here.
Alright, well hope to get some good discussion going and take it easy guys!!

You should probably check out the Ys games. They have all been ported/remade multiple times, and you can get the first six (!) titles all on PS2. Part 6 was localized, while the first five are Japanese (and I&II are on the same disc).
Best action-RPG series of all time, in my opinion.

Is Ys V the only one that hasn't come stateside?BoneSnapDeez wrote:You should probably check out the Ys games. To clarify, the PS2 versions of I&II, III, IV, and V are Japanese.Stark wrote:Is Ys V the only one that hasn't come stateside?BoneSnapDeez wrote:You should probably check out the Ys games. But yeah, I&II and III have been localized on other consoles. The part IV that's on PS2 (Mask of the Sun) is Japan-only actually (it's on Super Famicom originally). Same goes for V.

Y's is a good franchise...but I prefer Tales of. Just me. Right now I am trying like hell to track down Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Rebirth, Tales of Destiny Directors Cut, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Legendia, Tales of the Abyss, and Tales of Fandom. Dont think I am leaving any out. I am also trying to track down Final Fantasy International.
I own currently Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix+ which has Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of memories with it. Those are my only RPG's and I have put over 100 hours between all of them so far(50 for KHFM, 45+ for KH2FM, and 1-2 hours in RE: CoM. All good games.
Anyway, how often to PS2 imports show up on this site? I enjoy talking about them but I am looking for em at the same time so just curious.
Anyway, I hope to play a tales of game soon...having a craving to...heh.

Re: Japanese RPG's
I have Tales of Rebirth and Tales of Destiny 2. They're pretty decent games. I got both of them at video game conventions.
I have no idea how often PS2 imports are listed on this site, but none of those PS2 Tales games are particularly rare or expensive.

You should definitely look into the Suikoden series if you have not, the first three games are really the best of that series though.
Other RPGs to check out: Wild Arms series, Way of the Samurai, Vandal Hearts, Lunar I + II, Arc the Lad collection, Star Ocean: Second Story, Saga Frontier, Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle, Legend of Mana, .hack series, Grandia, Chocobo's Dungeon.
This will give you a few things to look at and see what's out there

Way of the Samurai is considered an RPG?Tildius Maximus wrote:You should definitely look into the Suikoden series if you have not, the first three games are really the best of that series though.

Re: Japanese RPG's
If you love JRPGs, then you must get a Nintendo DS (or 3DS, which is backwardly compatible with the DS). IMO, the very best JRPG migrated to handhelds during the PS2 generation.
