BC PS3 YLOD options

hey all,
so I have an 80gb 4 usb slot PS3 that gave me the ylod while watching a movie last night.
I let it sit shut down for a while and tried rebooting and it quickly flashed the yellow and red light and gave 3 beeps.
just checking today, same result.

problem is, I've never backed up my games and downloaded add ons.

so I am looking for best options now. I can probably deal with a PS3 that will play PS1 and PS3 games. and maybe sell my small collection of PS2 games.

I called geek squad and they can't transfer my files. I spose I can download them again. but I still loose my game saves which sucks.

anyway, I'm hoping you all can offer up some suggestions. thanks !

Well in the PS3 if I remember correctly it had a regular PC hard drive (3.5" I think). If you rip the thing out and place it in a PC tower or an enclosure I'm sure you can manage to take out what ever save files are in there, dump it in a flash drive and transfer it to your new PS3.

I have zero experience in this kind of stuff but maybe I helped in pointing you in the right direction. Maybe someone can chime in and confirm what I said.

PS3s can use a standard 2.5" SATA HDD with a height of or less than 9.5mm (I think it is).

That said, the PS3 format is proprietary, and keyed to the system. You can't read it on a PC (or Mac, etc). If you put it in another system, it'll make you format the drive to use it.

So, unfortunately, what you'd suggested is not a viable option.

There is a backup utility on the PS3, which can dump data to a FAT32 formatted drive, which can then be restored to another PS3 (or HDD, if you're simply upgrading that). You can also transfer data over a network from one PS3 to another.

What would be nice is if there was a way to import directly from a PS3 HDD in a USB dock...but there isn't that either.

I've been messing with this stuff the past few days as I've put a 1TB into my Slim, and the Slim's old 160GB HDD into my MGS4 bundle 80GB.

The best hope is to get the thing working again for the couple hours or so it'd take to run the backup utility.

Maybe when you buy another PS3 use it strictly for just PS3 games to save on the total mileage due to its YLOD issues? Slims have a better reputation of lasing longer. Might be good to pick up a PS2 console as well since they are very inexpensive, there are tons of great games you will be missing out on.

I put my motherboard in the oven at 250 degrees for 10 minutes and my ps3 came back to live. I am not bullshiting you, check my record.
I had had it repaired twice before by one of the repair centers, but that only lasted for a month or so.
The oven thing is a pretty radical way to repair it, but it just might work. It worked for me!

hey, thanks guys.

I did take it to the guys in the link there and they fixed it. a cleaning, new heat paste and I think they did heat up the mother board too. it was about $50 and an hour or so.

I think I'm going to buy a slim as you suggest CRTGAMER and maybe a slim PS2 as well.
I'll swap out my game saves to the slim.
for my PS2 game saves...I'll back them to a thumb drive for now. I have about 6-8 PS2 games and I don't think I'll be playing them as much...I don't know. I have the metal gears remastered for PS3 but I still have the originals too. O don't know if I'm going to play earlier versions of Gran Turismo. I could sell Shadow of Colossus PS3 version. I don't have a lot of time to play games really. too bad the PS4 won't be BC. I guess over time older games will be ported over. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a giant Metal Gear collection put together for the PS4 at some point. not to mention tons of other games.

O_O you put it in the oven and it fixed it? How would that fix it?

Would the proper way to repair it is to get a soldering iron and some quality brand thermal paste? Not the garbage Sony puts in the system.. But anyways.. Having Plus is probably the easiest way to circumvent this issue, but Isiolia's is probably the way to go..

The heat burns the chips contact-legs back onto the motherboard again. Check the internet. But be warned though, that it worked for me is no guarantee it will work for you as well. You just have te be like 'fuck it', if it dies, it dies! I predect that the poster of this threads ps3 will ylod again in a month or two. I hope not of course, but well that's what happened to mine and alot of others. Wasted $50.
