Finally got around to playing this game. Have watched some vids and have wanted to source a board but no luck...loaded up the rom tonight and have not been disappointed.

243,790 - mjmjr25 - BLACK character? - Stage 3 - MAME

STRATEGY / SCORING:
You have 3 attacks:
A - regular shot attack
HOLD A - Charge attack
HOLD A in VASARA MODE - Super Charge Attack
(B button is Bomb)

-There is gold ingot to collect - this is easy scoring.
-There are points for "Prestige Kills". These are enemies that you can kill or allow to go off-screen or run past you. They are multi-hit enemis. Each time you kill one, they drop their blood-soaked flag.
-At the end of your round - you are rewarded for the number of prestige kills you've made.
-There is chaining - each time you get a blood-soaked flag, it remains on screen, each flag you get to drop before that one goes away is chained (x2, x3, multiplier, etc)
Using your Vasara Super Charge Attack is key to kill multiples and to kill them quickly.
-To build your VASARA guage - collect rubies. Rubies are red and they are plentiful, but they fall fast and always seem to be near bullets and away from ingot.

What the hell! This game is fantastic! Was seriously blown away by the epic bosses, great use of close range-reflecting, weird but awesome sprites, stage order based on characters, length of stage... everything! Its like they took what I enjoy about Psikyo games and Takumi games, removed everything I don't like, and let them have sexors until a little Vasara baby came out.

Found this on shmups:

Sword Guy = Yukimura Sanada
Spear Guy = Keiji Maeda (Shima Sakon?)
Fan Gal = Saiga Magoichi

Good shit Mike. Can't wait to play this on something other than a keyboard, but I am stuck at work.

Also, lol @ Stage 4 boss. Fuck this shooting thing, I'm gonna taunt you and then straight up just cut you with ma sword.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing - there is very little I dislike about this game so far...and a lot I love. The difference in characters is significant. The yellow fan girl is super quick, but boy, very little power and her generic charge attack doesn't do much.

I might have been wrong on the chaining aspect, it might be how many enemies are killed with each charge attack that chains, not how many are killed before the prestige flags are on screen. I have to play some more to make sure I have it right. I had an 11-chain with the 2nd characters charge attack, his Vasara is legit.

Yeah, I think the idea is to kill the enemies that have those flags, so that you collect them and they add up at the end of the stage, but chaining seems to just be, "Kill as many dudes as possible with charge attack/Vasura"

Also, reflecting bullets might possibly drop a rubie or two? Couldn't tell for sure, but it seemed like I would get a rubie every time I used the charge on a boss, even though I wasn't killing anything. So either rubies drop whenever you strike a boss with charge, or whenever you reflect bullets? Not sure yet.

Agreed though, there is a lot to love here, and I can't think of anything I dislike at the moment. The boss' entries are all awesome. I love how some of the "midbosses" come at you right at the start of the level. Its also hilarious how, instead of dying from touching an enemy, you just get shoved around. Still puts you at risk to die, but in a much more intereting/funny way.

Also, any shmup where the characters ride around on the bikes (Porku!!!) immediately gets points in my book.

Haven't played this in a while. I think I prefer the bomb/vasara system in Vasara 2 - instead of having a bomb attack like the first game, you start with two 'Vasara' attacks in stock and can store up to three in total. The B button triggers your Vasara attack. I had a couple of credits in it as well and made it to Stage 3, I reckon it's slightly harder overall.
