Did I format my GameCube memory card?

I had a really important important GameCube memory card with important save files on it and while activating a Japan patch (on Sonic Adventure DX) I think I accidentally hit the format button to the reveal a new save file. And when I try to load the console afterwards it comes up with the same cannot be read thing, must be formatted thing.
Did I really wipe the card, or did it not wipe? And can I recover the files?
I'd really like to know, thanks in advance. :3
