SNES soundtrack on SEGA Genesis sound chip

Post by Aramonde »

I found two videos on youtube of a guy using a sound chip like the genesis has to play SNES music.(check his description and at 5:30 through 5:50 for info about the chip and track times)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMZJ6oQayAU(part 1) (There's white noise or static sound in this video but not in the part 2 video ???)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQCya6yn73o(part 2)

I really liked some of those songs better than the SNES versions. what do you guys think?

And i also don't know if this could be done on the genesis because of the top comment on the first video.
spock33279 on youtube wrote:Sorry, but this is not true Sega Genesis music. You're only using a midi that sounds like the Sega Genesis. The YM2612 has only a polyphony of 6, and including the samples, that's 5 FM Channels to use, and 1 drum channel. I heard 3 drums played at once, and the release on the instruments would take 10+ FM Channels.
I'm sure some of you who know a lot about the Genesis can be able to sort this out.

Also here are the SNES versions of the songs he used

At one point I was looking at importing a PC 88 because I was interested in covering SNES soundtracks with the Genesis sound chip. Those things are pretty expensive, though.

Anyway, I prefer the Wily Wars version of MM2 Wily 1 over the version in that link. I don't really understand the ennui fans seem to feel toward the Wily Wars soundtrack, either. (Outside of nostalgia.)

While some of those covers are interesting, it's worth noting it's not truly the Genesis sound chip he's working with; only midi.

As far as covers with Genesis sounds go, I like this one.

Definitely a lot of this on youtube, I love this stuff.

Count me in as one that can't stand The Wily Wars music, pierrot...

Hard to beat geckoyamori:

(this is how awesome Megaman music should have been on the Genesis!)

Super Metroid Medley

Worth looking over, lots of remixes of Genesis games using different game sounds and some SNES/N64/etc remixes.
