Doctor Who Talk

Post by MrEco »

Any Doctor Who fans here? If so, come in and give me your thoughts, opinions, and speculation. Classic Who talk is also welcome, though I've never had the time to see those ones myself.

Due to regular life problems I ended up missing most of season 6 and 7. With the 50th anniversary coming up, and my girlfriend wanting someone to talk about DW with, I've been buying all of the show on DVD and watching it in order. Currently on Season 4, with Tennant and Donna. Best season from what I've seen, personally.

I'm super excited for the 50th special, and can't wait to see everything about John Hurts' character.

I'll resume watching the show only to witness Peter Capaldi in a less-than-menacing role

Is Doctor Who really that good? It's been around since the 60's and I haven't heard of it until now, and boy have I heard of it. I can't go anywhere without seeing this crap now. What's with the sudden explosion of popularity?

I tend to lump Twilight, Hunger Games, The Big Bang Theory, My Little Pony and Doctor Who fans all together and avoid it like the plague. I have heard some redeeming things that want to make me give Doctor Who a shot though. I hate judging a show without watching it, but I have to say that most fans are annoying as hell and a huge turn off. Keeps me from wanting to watch the show.... :?

Tennant was amazing, and the real highlight of the Doctor Who reboot, but Matt Smith is amazing in his own way and you could argue he's had the best companions since the reboot started in Roury and Amy(though I loved Donna)

The Girl Who Waited and The Doctor's Wife are two of the best episodes of Matt Smith's run. The Doctor's Wife was written by Neil Gaiman.

One of the best things about current generation Doctor Who is that it spun off Torchwood, which had one of the best seasons of Sci Fi television ever created in the "Children of Earth" story arc, and it probably paved the way for the excellent Sherlock, which was created by the same person currently running Doctor Who

I'd say give it a shot. Every fan base has it's bad apples, you just need to know where to look. Don't let that stop you from enjoying a potentially awesome show.

Then again I also happen to enjoy My Little Pony and The Hunger Games, so maybe I'm the exact kind of person you're turned off by.

Also I'm wondering if they'll do some sort of retcon at some point for the Fires of Pompeii episode, since Peter Capaldi was front and center in that. Maybe make it so that the upcoming 12th Doctor had to use the chameleon arch again and it dropped him into ancient Rome?

Funny enough Peter Capaldi also played a character in the Children of Earth special Gamerforlife mentioned. The man get's around it seems.

Yeah, I'd like to give it a shot. I've been completely surprised by shows/games that I had originally thought were going to be terrible.

I don't want to seem like a complete ass, so let me explain what I meant. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, and if you like those shows then great! Those kinds of things just don't catch my attention and how popular they are gets quite annoying. I say that, but I kind of like Adventure Time and love Regular Show.

Reading into Doctor Who, it seem kind of like Quantum Leap but on a larger scale?

Hey...woah there.

Hunger Games was a fantastic book...don't you lump me with Bronys.

On the topic of Doctor Who, I have watched it a few times but never saw the massive appeal it seems to have for a lot of people. Wasn't bad at all but didn't bring me in to be a fan.

It's a cultural preference as well. I don't have any numbers to back me up but I reckon the UK has the largest base of Doctor Who fandom, naturally since it originated there. It's a peculiar franchise and has memorable characters and even the iconic phonebooth so no wonder really why it has thrived for decades.

I liked old Doctor Who (mostly the Fourth Doctor) when I was in high school and college. I never watched the new series and now I feel like I'm SO OUT OF THE LOOP that I'm no longer qualified to call myself knowledgeable.

I feel like I've gone from being A+ DOCTOR WHO FAN by having watched some 50 or so old-timey episodes to F-- Doctor Who "fan" for not knowing what the deal is with those angel statues or anything about Torchwood or having even the slightest clue as to what's going on.
I don't have a great desire to get back into it though... But maybe someday I'll get some more old series DVDs if I find myself in the right mood?
