I don't get it. How would SC5 be considered a shmup?

Well, timing is critical and she shoots aliens with her laser pistol. There are bosses to defeat too, usually more difficult than the aliens through the levels.

Admittedly, I don't think there are any bullet patterns to avoid...

That's the silliest "shmup" I ever heard of  So easy even I could probably 1cc it.

Yep! It has that going for it! I really must buy it.

Any other "doubtful" shmups out there?

How about The Red Star (PS2)?

Most of the time, it looks like this:

but...sometimes...it looks like this:

It's an awesome game...but is it a shmup?

A good rule of thumb is "if you have to ask if it's a shmup, it isn't".

OK...then...what about Thunder Force?

From HG101:

"The game format is completely free directional scrolling overhead stages where you fight airborne enemies and bomb ground targets in search of a set amount of hidden shield generators. Once all the shield generators in the stage are found and destroyed, the game shifts to a screen where you have to destroy a portion of a large fortress named the Dyradeizer. Once this is done, you move on to the next stage and repeat the process. . . . The gameplay is just as basic as the graphics, with the ship having an airborne shot and a crosshair for ground shots a la Xevious. Simple looking enemies and ground turrets attack you every now and then, and the stages are more or less all the same."

Its sequels are definitely shmups, but is the original a shmup?

EDIT: Or are they? I forgot that Thunder Force II also features "free scrolling" overhead sections...Is is still a shmup?

Would you guys consider Bangai-o a shmup? I could never determine whether it is a shmup or a run/fly and gun game.
