Maybe I should try the new Pokemon...

Post by Valkyrie-Favor »

I've never played a Pokemon game for more than a few hours, probably because they start so very slowly, the battles are very simple, and I've always been trying games a generation or more behind.

I was definitely missing out on the social aspect. Pokemon is meant to be played with friends, and I never did that. Maybe I'd enjoy these games more if I played them when they were new?

Any Pokemon fans here? What do you like about the games? Do you play with others? Think I'll like it? I'm mighty curious.

I have friends who play Pokemon, but even then...meh seems kinda boring.

Plus, it takes long time to train your guys properly.

As much crap as people like to talk about games being the same, Pokemon doesn't get nearly the scrutiny for it.

I'm probably not going to get the latest Pokemon even if I get a 3DS. There are a lot of other games I'd rather play. For multiplayer experience, maybe...but I'd rather play Monster Hunter personally.

I've tried multiple times to "get" Pokemon, every time a new generation of the series comes out. I tried it on GB, GBA, and DS. And every time I'm just entirely bored and feel not-at-all drawn into the game's world. I always leave feeling like I'm either too old for it or I just don't "get it" still. But what is to get? You grind up a bunch of cutesy monsters so you can win a bunch of badges and... CATCH 'EM ALL. Isn't that the plot of every single mainline Pokemon game? If that's really it, then I'll never "get it".

That said, the upcoming 3DS entries look very nice aesthetically, so I'll probably give this series one-last-try.

I was really into the original games but lost interest quickly and ignored every subsequent generation. Some of my college buddies got into Diamond and Pearl so I tried it out but it didn't click with me. I didn't even finish the game before selling it off.

Granted X and Y looks pretty impressive and finally moves the core series into 3D. It's tempting to give it another go but I doubt it's going to make a believer out of me.

I was part of the initial craze with Blue and Red and enjoyed them well enough. I can see myself going back to those for the sake of nostalgia. It didn't take very long into the next generation for me to lose interest though, with Gold. I'm not one to complain about more of the same, but all of these games are the exact same thing. I had ignored the series for awhile, but decided to give Black/White a chance just to see how I felt. I wasn't able to last for more than a few hours, it was pretty much the exact same boring game that I had played 10 years ago. I'm not asking for explosions or QTEs, but they had done nothing to make it feel fresh or newly interesting. In a way I can respect it for never straying from its roots though.

So I guess my take on it is that at least one game is worth checking out, but unless the formula completely captivates you, it's not worth playing any others.

I've said this before but I really don't think age has anything to do with it though. I don't understand why that is always brought up with Pokemon. It's not like other JRPGs are super mature and this is kids only or something.

Never was able to get into them. And the overwhelming number of games kinda irks me, to be honest.

I think I would like the roguelike (Mystery Dungeon) titles though... Explorers of Darkness/Sky look pretty cool.

Huge fan of the first/second generation of games (red, blue, yellow, gold, silver) but I feel like the series has gone downhill and the new Pokemon designs are lazy and uninspired. I'll stick with the original games that I still enjoy playing.

If you want the social aspect, why not play the CCG with other 12 year olds?

In all seriousness, Pokemon completely passed me by. I thought it was dumb when I first saw it, both the card game on then later the Game Boy game. I think partially because I was into huge, epic RPGs, and this wasn't cutting it, but also because I played M:tG, and Pokemon was like a "kids lite" version of it.

Yeah I was 15/16 when Pokemon got big and felt "too old" for it. I was a big MtG player and Pokemon cards just looked silly (as did Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, for that matter).
