Your journey into retro games?
Your journey into retro games?
What got you into retro games? Were you always interest or did you have a sudden urge to plunder the infinite library of retro games?
I got into retro games after I shook my bad habit. Considering it took up most of my day, I had a lot of time left over. I started clocking in 40+ hours a week on my PS3. Soon enough the PS3 library just wasn't cutting it. I started looking into the NES and wasn't ready to take the leap. Months passed before finally I said "Fuck It" and bought a FC Twin with a few games. About 2 weeks after that I joined this forum.

Re: Your journey into retro games?
I was born in the 80's and never really stopped playing them since they were new.
If I didn't own the consoles I was at least emulating them.
Though the story is different if you ask how I got into starting a serious collection of retro games. That began my first year of college when when I started working in the library and began buying the hell out of all the Genesis and NES games I could get my hands on in the music/video store they had in town. I started with the games I used to rent all of the time and then it boomed from there.
I joined Sega-16's forum and wrote a few reviews for them in their early days then ended up here eventually when I noticed an excerpt of my review for Sub-Terrania was used in a Genesis hidden gems article.

Re: Your journey into retro games?
I had a SNES until I was about eight, but my dad took it when he and mom divorced. I was stuck with the Xbox.
Afterwards I spent a lot of time on the internet because I wanted to find out more about my favorite games. This led me to read through the Wikipedia articles of just about every game system in existence.
My mom found a new boyfriend after the divorce. He had a NES, SNES and later an N64, which I got (along with his PS2/3) when we eventually left. Anyways, when we moved in to his house I started finding retrogaming videos like AVGN, Talking Classics, and, (shudder) Irate Gamer. These, along with an unwillingness to throw away my old systems, made me dive into retrogaming and never look back.

I just genuinly enjoy retro games better than today. They are more aesthetically pleasing to me. Pixels will always win out over fancy graphics in my book. Plus I feel video games have gone the same road as movies. Less Quality gameplay(plot for movies) and more 'Explosions and HD visuals'

Same with Hobie. I just never left them. I never got rid of any of my games or consoles from my childhood, starting with the Famicom. My first console was a 5200, but it broke.
Re: Your journey into retro games?
I feel you. I was playing my PS3 like crazy and $65 (for 6-20 hours) a pop became a burden, considering I make $100 a week. Originally, I hated retro games because of the (mind my words) "shitty graphics". Later I started play the PS2 much more (my childhood console) and that barrier kind of went away. What really drew me in was the fact that there is an INFINITE library of undiscovered games and I didn't have to spend boku bucks.TheGregzilla wrote:I just genuinly enjoy retro games better than today. I am a late bloomer.
For me the madness began once I bought a Dreamcast in 2010 or so.
