The Best or Worst Console Version (or iteration) Ever

Post by superyoda41 »

In light of the coming of two new consoles, I was wondering what people think are the single best console version/iterations ever.

The criteria is which update/model/feature change version of a console is the best or worst? I guess both overall or by system. I don't mean this to be rank the consoles, but I guess go one layer deeper.

I have always thought that the 60gb PS3 is the single best console ever. Full compatibility across three systems with actual native PS2 output, not emulation. The Wi-fi combined with blu-ray sealed the deal.

I unfortunately grabbed the 20gb model, which really works fine because I didn't need the wi-fi at the time, and still don't, but I think that was the 60gb deal breaker.

I would have to say the CD-X would probably be my runner-up.

Any other thoughts (and I apologize if this has been done, but I did a search, couldn't find it before and I am not going to dig through pages and pages of old posts to discover if someone started this topic before)

It's funny when the PS3 first released, it got harsh reviews and was rated by many to be one of the worst electronic device to be released the year it came out. Now, everyone seems to love it.

Looking back, that CECHA model did a lot to video game world. It killed HD DVD format and made Blu-Ray the next big format. It cost Sony millions of dollars in losses and since then no video game hardware maker has made such an investment again in hardware.

GBA SP with backlight (not frontlight) is a contender IMO. Compatible with cartridges for all three Gameboys, the clamshell design protects the screen, it has the best picture quality and colors, and it has a rechargeable battery.

Another one I would mention is the Sega Genesis model 1. It has the best sound quality of the various models, is the only home console to feature a headphone jack (that I know of), is compatible with both models of the Sega CD and the 32X, and is the only model that is compatible with the Power Base Adapter out of the box (lets you play Master System games on a Genesis).

Also, the DSi XL. It's the ultimate DS. It incorporates all the best things about the DS Lite and DSi, while fixing everything those same model broke. It is durable, comfortable, has clicky buttons, has bigger screens and much better sound than the Lite, and yet the battery life is just as good (and somehow it's actually better than that of the original DSi).

And yet one more: the original Wii model (the one with the sideways logo). It does everything any other Wii can do, plus it's compatible with Gamecube games and accessories. Having the option to use a GCN controller on SSBB is great, and a Wii is a great cheap alternative for playing GCN games via component cables if you don't want to pay $100 for that privilege. As long as you don't have one of the really early units that seem to have disc drive issues, they're very durable as well.

Hmm, it's funny looking over my list and seeing that 3/4 of my choices are made by Nintendo, considering that I've always preferred Playstation. I guess I have to admit Nintendo makes better hardware even if I do prefer Sony's software.

The Neo Geo AES has a headphone jack too.

I'm agreeing with OP. I don't have one myself, but i've wanted one since they came out. Having access to the massive and diverse PS2 library really puts it over the top for me.

Oh I forgot about the AGS-101, 01toubib.

Yes, I totally agree about that. The SP is just the sweet spot for the cross compatiblity and the screen was so much better than the first SP.

I remember I went to study abroad in the summer of '09 and went to Gamestop to buy a used SP for the flights. I ask if they have SP in stock, she says they have plenty, but then I ask for the 101 and the girl didn't know there was any difference.

10 minutes of digging and they found one. And they knocked off 5 bucks because something was all over it (sticker residue or something), but I cleaned it off with goo gone.
