What Does PS2 Modding Do?
What Does PS2 Modding Do?
I constantly see modding services advertised on the site. What exactly does modding a PS2 do?
Re: What Does PS2 Modding Do?
A lot of people use FMCB, some like hardmods (chips)
Hardmod:
Direct Boot of PS2 Imports (USA, EUR, JPN)
Direct Boot of PS2 Backups (CD-R, DVD-R, Domestic & Imports)
Direct Boot of PSone Imports (USA, EUR, JPN)
Direct Boot of PSone Backups (CD-R, Domestic and Imports)
Able to force NTSC for PAL games or PAL for NTSC games.
Some of us like the ability to have one system and be able to play all our imports (not backups).
Back in the day of the PSX/PSone era I use to install chips that only allowed Original/Pressed Disc from any Region to load. Worked out a deal with a small mom and pop game shop to mod US sytems in exchange for Import Games. Kids use to come back all mad because it didn't play backups and we told them the service was for Imports, Universal, Region Free Systems only.

PSone, Xbox, PS2, DC, SS Mod Service, PM for details
Re: What Does PS2 Modding Do?
You can also download a program that forces the original games resolution into its original format, which means potential for forced resolutions like 720p and 1080i, called GS Mode Selector:

Re: What Does PS2 Modding Do?
Hard or soft modding a PS2 will let you run any code compiled for a PS2 without it being on a pressed commercial PS2 disc. You unlock the protection on it's processors, ports, and hard drive.
You can run PS2 programs off of any disc, or with a properly formatted memory card have access to it's hard drive and it's USB ports. You can save game discs to it's hard drive and run them without the disc loading time - the games actually run faster and better than a retail copy.
You can pre-run programs before a game loads that forces the game's resolution to one that takes advantage of your screen (lower or higher resolution) or run cheat programs before loading a game to change how games run and modify the game mechanics (Game Shark/Pro Action Replay). You have access to a file manager to copy or move game save files to and from a USB thumbdrive and your memory card for backup, loading, and editing (finished - all levels unlocked & modded game saves are available online). You can even run emulators for other consoles - I love that you can get Nintendo games running on the PS2 in 240P through component or RGB (SCART or otherwise). If you have a 480i component capable CRT, you can enjoy NES scanline perfection that would otherwise cost a lot more coming from a dedicated game console. If you set the files up right, you only have to hold down a trigger button to activate those functions as you boot the PS2, and otherwise it will function exactly like it did before the mod.

Can you elaborate more on the "unlock protection" and "Only have to hold down a button" parts?Anapan wrote:Hard or soft modding a PS2 will let you run any code compiled for a PS2 without it being on a pressed commercial PS2 disc. You unlock the protection on it's processors, ports, and hard drive.

Re: Protection
Normally a PS2 will only run a game or program if it's on a specially pressed CD or DVD - that's the copy protection built into every PS2. Once a PS2 is modded it will boot up games and programs on any disc (burnt or other region) Additionally, with a modded memory card it'll also be able to boot programs and games off one of the memory cards or a USB thumb-drive, external USB hard drive or an internal hard drive (Phat PS2 w/ network adapter).
Re: Buttons
One of the features of Free McBoot/uLaunchELF is program loading at bootup via holding down a specific button as it's being loaded. If you set it up right, you can have for instance trigger button R1 set to load HDLoader, R2 to disable the Softmod features, L1 to load GSM graphics mode selector, and L2 to load GameShark. This can be configured via uLaunchELF's configuration file.
