Well the original was more of a curiosity than anything. I'm not really sure how many people have been patiently waiting for a sequel.

There's already a sequel on the PS2, anyway. Most seem to not even realize that, because, as you mentioned, it's really a curiosity, and probably not worth any company building into a series. (Also, it was only released in Japan.)
