Never played the original though I've always been interested in getting to know my own Seaman.

I think it might be more of a "spiritual successor" than a sequel.

There's already a sequel on the PS2, anyway. Most seem to not even realize that, because, as you mentioned, it's really a curiosity, and probably not worth any company building into a series. (Also, it was only released in Japan.)
