The fear of HD Collection

Post by Andavive »

Ok the title may not be that accurate lol

While running trough ebay i was about to buy an RPG and then i remembered the announcment of Tales of Symphony HD Collection for the PS3.

There are a lot of games being remaded into HD collections, especially RPG`s just like happened to Final Fantasy X recently.
I want the game in its most perfect complete state, so i held back and i didnt buy the game, because, maybe it will get into an HD colecction.

This can happen to virtually any videogame.

Dont you think that maybe you could be risking wasting money in retro games to see a new updated version being released on new consoles?

Im not talking about compilations, those exist since old times, but more about the trilogy`s and duo`s.

How can you be sure you are buying a retro game, for the price of a new release, and not seeing it get into an HD collection in the near future?

Strange feeling lol
Just a tought :P

Various games have been remade/ported/re-released many times throughout history. That trend won't change so it's just a part of the game really. It's only really a problem if you have an obsessive need to repurchase them. Just don't "double-dip" very much and you'll be fine.

I'm generally fine with just owning one version of any given game. The only HD collection I "rebought" was MGS HD and that was largely due to the fact that it has Peace Walker on the disc and I didn't own a PSP at the time.

Just do your research and keep on top of that stuff and you'll be fine.

Sometimes I feel stupid buying a game I know has a newer version out, but at the same time it's nice to have it for collectors value.

Unless a game has been massively improved, I dont think there is much of a problem about buying an a game even if it becomes the "old version".

Actually this is the same sort of issue that movie and music collectors face. Movie collectors pretty much have no way of knowing if a movie they just bought is going to get a re-release with a better transfer right around the corner, and music fans never know when that rare album they just went out and bought is going to get a repressing.

I think you shouldn't worry about it too much. Sometimes it simply happens.

I look forward to HD collections of games I love. So long as they are well done. Bring them on.

Plus, we already have precedent for an hd collection being arguably worse than the original releases. See Silent Hill HD.

I won't be surprised if something like that happens again.

But a vast majority of the time it is subjectively 'better'. Sort of depends on how much effort is put into the release. There will always be a few bad ones.

I really do not care. I enjoy the retro games for what they are. So while they may remake them in HD, they are just a different version of a game I enjoy. And while they may be the exact same game just prettier, well sometimes you just want those old pixels.

Case in point:
While this is coming:

I still enjoy this:

We're not talking full on remakes so much as those HD "remasterings" of games.

Something like Metal Gear Solid 2 really doesn't look too much different in HD. It's nicer looking and has widescreen, but it's very clearly the same game as it was on the Ps2.
