Anyone offer a wireless controller conversion service?

Post by treepop »

I know it's possible to make basically any controller for a retro system wireless over RF. I was curious if anyone was offering that as a service, since I am not super skilled and my mods would look like trash.

How much would it cost/controller? I am looking to do:
NES
SNES (maybe make it so I can use snes on nes to save $?)
N64
Genesis (will take care of sms, genesis, atari The official Sega wireless is IR which I hate :()
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
PC-Engine Duo

Thanks!

This is where I saw it:

I would also be willing to commission these if they were done well and at a not-completely-ridiculous price. Was very intrigued when I saw that original post, but even IF I pulled off the electronics (and that's a big IF), I couldn't make the case for the receiver look good.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

Sweet. 2 buyers!

Right now I have 9 different controller types and when I start playing my systems it becomes a mass of wires. Then I get lazy and just toss them into my basket of controllers and the mass gets even worse. I would love to get rid of my wires so I can enjoy all my systems without the frustration of cords.

Going wireless on all those different controllers can get expensive. Some of the consoles you listed might have a 3rd party wireless controller, though they could be Infra which needs a direct line of site though. The easiest method would be to gut out the PCB out of the existing wired controller and matching buttons to an older wireless unit that has a separate receiver. Getting the correct power to it and Identifying the inner workings for each button of the receiver might be an issue though.

The PS2 has wireless 3rd party controller and there are adapters for most consoles. It could be done by patching a cable between the adapter and PCB of the gutted original controller. To get back the original controller, you would have to gut out a 2nd original controller to convert back from the PCB of the wireless. This probably won't work anyways since the wireless PCB has to be wired to a project box.

Why not just get boxes to store the controllers to say four to a box? Take the time to put them away right so you won't have the christmas light tangle later on. I leave a controller plugged into each console with the cable loosely wrapped so always ready to play. The trick is to untangle the cable and plugging into the console BEFORE loosely wrapping the coils.

I think retro bit is going to be making wireless retro controllers, these are the same guys who made the retro duo I believe. Right now only the N64 one will be available but they will be offering Nes and SNES controllers in the future. So far they say that each controller will be an affordable $30

sorry for the double post but I just found out that the N64 and Snes/nes controllers seem to be available already.

I'll have to go watch some reviews to see if they are worth it. The seem too cheap to be any good, $15 for the snes/nes one?

I contacted the guy who made that video you linked. He offered to sell me his last SNES controller for over $300. Good luck.
