What GB/GBC/GBA games translate the best to the big screen?

Post by Nutty »

Just a question I'd thought I'd pose for those of you with a Game Boy Player on their GC or via vbagx on the Wii (like me) or however else you do it. Do you have a favorite game that looks/plays great on your handheld but is severely lacking on your TV? On the other end of that, are there any games you enjoy playing more on the larger format?

The few I've been playing are listed below and some definitely fare better than others on my 50 inch plasma. I don't apply filtering as it seems to make the screen look worse too me....

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - Blocky but still charming and fun.
Legend of Zelda: Minnish Cap - Looks great.
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams - Looks OK.
Sonic Advance - Rough around the edges visually but still very fun too play.
Super Puzzle Fighter II - My favorite puzzle game but pretty hideous looking when stretched out.

You know what GBA line of games definitely doesn't look good on GBP? NES Classics Series. There's always too few scan-lines for my liking, and if you already have an NES, why play them?

Many Super Game Boy games look pretty good on TV though. Pokemon Red/Blue for example, as it's one of the only ways the game can be played in almost-full color.
I really just post questions most of the time. I'm that kind of person, but who cares...

Yeah, I like how some games had enhanced colors on the Super Game Boy. The Pokemon games are a great example, I like how the HP gauge goes from green to yellow to red. I'm still frustrated that the GB Player for the GCN didn't have the SGB color enhancements.

Yeah, lots of Game Boy games are made for the Super Game Boy.

I always found it humorous that a Super Game Boy enhanced version of Contra: The Alien Wars exists. Wouldn't it be easier just to play the SNES game?

The GB version was much cheaper I'm sure.

Tetris Attack, Animaniacs, Aladdin, Monopoly, Toy Story and others had both SNES & Game Boy versions too. There were some people back in the day who had a Game Boy but couldn't afford an SNES you know.

Maybe I am stating the obvious...but I think that the main selling point for the Gameboy version of Contra: The Alien Wars was the fact that it was a portable version of a popular game...The SNES version - at least at the time - was not portable...

On topic...the GBA Metroid and Castlevania games both translate pretty well to a big screen. Gameboy Donkey Kong also looks great on a Super Gameboy, and I have found that portable RPGs are fun to play on a larger screen when you are at home.

Any games with a decent sound track will, because the GBA has native mono audio. Case in point -- Final Fantasy V!
