I'm currently writing my Top 15 favorite games of all time list and it made me think how powerful and epic the storyline of Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne was. It gave birth to the WoW lore (which WoW later on raped) and it basically made me feel like the Lord of the Rings books&movies. The whole conflict between the forces of good and evil, leaders arguing with each other while the enemy grew stronger and stronger, the feeling of desperation etc. Sure it's no Planescape, but overall I think it's pretty damn well written story, given that this is what most fantasy and RPG games aim for with their storylines, and it's the only game that I've played that have made me really feel like there is no hope for future and so on. How come this story doesn't get any more recognition? Is it because it's a real time strategy game (with RPG elements) rather than a traditional RPG? What do you guys think?
Even overall, I think this game is massively underrated, even though it's a Blizzard game and has sold millions of copies. Epic storyline and intresting lore. This game gave birth to a whole new genre of games (DOTA clones) and even besides that there's all kinds of different multiplayer modes (hero linewars, Tower Wars and Tower Defence etc) AND this game was for a long time one of the biggest eSports. And it has amazing cutscenes. Seriously, 11 years later they still look gorgeous.
And yes, I do acknowledge that Blizzard is pretty much stealing other people's ideas (RTS gameplay mechanics from Dune, Warcraft=Warhammer+Starcraft=Warhammer 40K+a lot of Dungeons&Dragons stuff was used in Warcraft&World of Warcraft). It's not originality which they succeed in, but rather at making the best product out of the "run of the mill fantasy setting" that so many other games also use.
So what do you guys think of the Warcraft 3 storyline? Do you think that it's underated? How about Warcraft 3 as a game, is it underrated?
Do you think that Wacraft 3 has an underrated story?

Re: Do you think that Wacraft 3 has an underrated story?
Not really. Not for the actual story. Which isn't to say it's bad, but more that it's just nothing that special on its own if set up with the multitude of fantasy game settings.
It's more that it benefits from Blizzard's tendency to polish every aspect of their products.
As a game, I don't think WCIII is underrated by fans of the genre. I do think it's probably overlooked by a lot of folks who would enjoy it though. It's one of the few RTS games I've played through the campaign on, mostly because of the Hero character setup and really feeling like a halfway point between an RPG and an RTS game. Having a "main character" in missions changes the dynamic for me.
Still, in general, I don't think most people are overlooking Warcraft. Guild Wars might be a better candidate for that, though it's still fairly popular.

Well in their defense, atleast the stories I have been told, they went to Games Workshop and tried to license Warhammer for a PC game. GW said no, so they made Warcraft. They tried again, and again GW said no, so they made Starcraft. Now GW wants in...Menegrothx wrote:And yes, I do acknowledge that Blizzard is pretty much stealing other people's ideas (RTS gameplay mechanics from Dune, Warcraft=Warhammer+Starcraft=Warhammer 40K+a lot of Dungeons&Dragons stuff was used in Warcraft&World of Warcraft). That's kind of what I mean. Many RPGs have similiar stories and get praised for their stories, but yet people overlook/don't mention Wacraft 3 because it's a RTS game. In fact if anything, Warcraft stands out because you've got 4 different factions, different leader characters/heroes fighting against each other within those factions and other forces like the Burning Legion, and the whole teaming up to fight against Kil'jaeden thingisiolia wrote: As a game, I don't think WCIII is underrated by fans of the genre.
