Going to Japan, need game recommendations

Post by Menegrothx »

Fooled ya, actually my big sister is going to Japan. She's agreed to check out some local game stores for me (game store recommendations are welcome btw) so what I need to do is a compile a list of games that she should look out for. Japan exclusive games are my main priority, but I also accept non-text heavy games that are considerably cheaper in Japan (like Bonk for Turbografx/PC Engine). She can only get me games, heavy stuff like arcade sticks, consoles and computers are out of question.

I can play Japanese games on the following platforms:
Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, PC Engine (CD), Saturn, Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, Dreamcast, Virtual Boy, 3DO, Wonderswan Color, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Game Boy Color/Advance, PS3.

I'm mainly intrested in getting games for the following platforms: PC Engine (CD), Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Saturn, Neo Geo CD, Dreamcast, Wonderswan Color. Neo Geo AES games are too space consuming and heavy, but she can bring few of these with her. I'm mostly intrested in AES games if the game in question is really good and is so cheap in Japan in the wild that it's pure madness to not to buy a copy when given the chance.

My biggest intrest is 2D games with beautiful, bright and colorful graphics in the following genres. I'll also give examples for each genre so you know the kind of look/style that I appreciate.
Platformer: Astal, Rayman, Ristar, (The Adventures of) Lomax, Tempo, Earthworm Jim, (Misadventures of) Flink, Mega Man 7 etc etc.
Beat em up: Three Dirty Dwarves, Guardian Heroes, Pu-Li-Ru-La, D&D collection, Capcom arcade games
Run n gun: Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug games
Cute em ups: Parodius, Sexy Parodius, Detana TwinBee Yahoo! Deluxe Pack. I also include games like Kolibri and Agony in this category.
Fighting games: Pretty much every game that was made by SNK and Capcom in the mid/late 1990s.

Besides 2D games, I'm also intrested in Japan exclusive 3D platformers. But really all intresting, noteworthy and good Japan exclusive games (that aren't sports, puzzle or racing games nor text heavy adventure/RPG games), like Dr Hauzer for 3DO and Innsmouth no Yakata for Virtual Boy, will do. And I'm always looking for more batshit crazy super japanese games like LSD and PuLiRuLa.
Also if there's shmups or other games that don't match my intrests but are cheap in Japan but valued in the West that can be sold/traded easily on these forums, I'm open to suggestions.
One more thing: I really want find some platformers for Neo Geo Pocket (Color) and Wonderswan (Color). The only two platformers I have for those are Sonic Pocket Adventure and Kaze no Klonoa: Moonlight Museum.

So, here's a list of games that I have found out through research or own already, so don't suggest any of the following titles :)
Sega Saturn: Super Tempo, Detana TwinBee Yahoo! Deluxe Pack, Tenchi Wo Kurau II, Ninpen Manmaru, Vampire Savior, Keio Yugekitai Katsugekihen, Waku Waku 7, Dark seed (I'll probably get the Amiga version), Sexy Parodius, Dungeons&Dragons collection, Rabbit, Pu-Li-Ru-La, Princess Crown
Neo Geo CD: Last Blade 2,Flying Power Disc
Neo Geo AES: Miracle Adventure (Spinmaster)
I'm aware of the more popular SNK games (KOF, World Heroes, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown etc) so only suggest Neo Geo games that are more obscure like Last Blade and Waku Waku 7
Super Famicom: Pop'n TwinBee: Rainbow Bell Adventures, Rockman 7, DoReMi fantasy, Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shougun Magginesu, Disney's Magical Quest 3 starring Mickey & Donald
Mega Drive:Pulseman, Bare Knuckle 3, Panorama Cotton
Virtual Boy: Innsmouth no Yakata
3DO: Strahl, Pyramid Intruder, Dr Hauzer
PC Engine (CD): Star Parodia, Rondo of Blood
Dreamcast: Rez (I'll probably buy the PAL version)

Please mention genre and platform when suggesting games :)

Most of the stuff I'd probably suggest you've already got covered, so I'm gonna nominate Keio Flying Squadron 2 for Saturn.

I actually mentioned Keio 2 (Keio Yugekitai Katsugekihen) :) I'm still not sure whether I want the PAL or Japanese version though.

I'll add all the suggested games that meet my criteria to the OP

Great suggestion. Although it's an ARPG, does it have a lot of dialogue or anything like that where you need know Japanese?

If you like beat-em-ups, I recommend Double Dragon II: The Revenge for the PCE CD. Shin Nekketsu Koha for the Super Famicom is excellent too.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

You should take one order from everyone who wants something and then have it all sent back in one large go. :P

I might get DD2 but Shin Nekketsu Koha doesn't look very appealing to me. I'm a graphics whore when it comes to these things (although that doesn't mean I might not buy the said game later on, just that it's not very high on my priority list)

Yeah if you have some particular game wish, you can PM me. There's budget and space limitations though so I can't make any promises, but if there's a game you want me to ask her to look out for, I can put it on the list.
