Cool tropes that you love.

Post by JayJaySut »

Sometimes videogames will have those little moments, things that you've seen before but can't get enough of for some reason. Things that when I was a little kid I always thought were so cool and would say why don't more games do this, or I like it when games do this etc. some of my examples:
1. really obnoxious announcers
2. when a final boss comes back and he's even harder
3. when you beat the game and there's a scene with no music where something blows up/
crumbles to the ground/princess is saved
4.secret levels and easter eggs
5. weird title screen cheat codes that get stuff like: big head mode
6. Little mini games you can play at the loading screen.
7. extra art galleries and sound tests

That ended up being longer than I expected but what are yours?

Cheat codes in general are something that kinda went away this generation. I miss the silly ones like this.
6. Little mini games you can play at the loading screen.
Didn't Activision or Namco or someone patent that so now nobody else can do it?

Also, one of my personal favorites is sequels briefly revisiting locations from previous games. You know, stuff like revisiting rooms from Brinstar and Tourian from the original Metroid early on in Super Metroid.

Remember how Namco put Galaga on the first Tekken game for PSX? That's a pretty nifty feature to deal with long loading times!

Variations on the standard game over screen ("You Died!").

My favorite is when your best friend/confidant/guy who has been helping you through the whole game, ends up being a bad guy as the twist in the end.

I don't know why, it just makes me groan with a grin!

-Crazy announcers as was mentioned

-I actually love bad dialogue/voice overs, just not in big budget titles.

-Pretty much anything crazy Japanese (over the top screaming or gestures, insane animations, etc). Kind of surprising because I only like anime a little bit, but there's it seems like video games are a place where that kind of stuff makes sense and should be there i.e., remember when games were just fun?

Yet another reason why modern games feel soulless. I wonder if there's anything like Gameshark or any similiar device for Xbox 360. Atleast I haven't heard of anything like that. Even the PS2 had one (getting invincibility in GTA Vice City was a good enough incentive for actually buying one).
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

No, there's no similar device for anything past the PS2. GameShark type devices require the ability to either directly access memory at runtime or to intercept the signals between the game and the hardware in order to modify the data on the fly, and modern consoles do not allow any of those through a hardware option. A soft-modded Wii can run GameShark-like code, though.

You can blame the cheat code issue with achievements. I remember when some games did have cheat codes there would be a warning saying if you do this, you can't get any achievements.

Guess they placed a higher priority on the achievements over the cheats.

A similar situation is occurring with DLC. There aren't any fun unlocks in games anymore because companies would rather charge $5 at the marketplace for anything extra. When they started selling alternate costumes I almost fainted. Can you imagine a game like MvsC2? That game would've been about 25% less fun if it came out today because there'd be no or almost no unlocks.
